4-panel comic. (1) PERSON 1: Any plans for Halloween? PERSON 2 with beret: Me and my friends are gonna check out a slab graveyard! (2) PERSON 1: What’s that? PERSON 2: When dense crust subducts, geologists think it might pile up at the bottom of the mantle. [illustration of Person 2’s related theory] (3) PERSON 2: We’re going to hide in the crust and ride it down to see. Wanna come? It’s gonna be spooky! (4) PERSON 1: Won’t that take millions of years? PERSON 2: Lots of time for ghost stories! PERSON 1: I think I’m good. PERSON 2: Too spooky? I understand.

Unhappily awake at 3 AM thanks to the joys of jet lag, I’ve been going through my photos. Here’s a beautifully clear view of Foraker (left), Hunter (middle), and Denali (right) taken from Willow, AK when I was doing fieldwork there this time last year.
Road with signs and yellow and green trees along the sides. In the distance, three large white (fresh snow!) mountains dominate the landscape.

1982 | Gophers and Plants Two years after Mount St. Helens erupted, researchers were surprised by what had survived. Pocket gophers had lived underground on stored roots and seeds. Weedy, root-sprouting plants were reclaiming blowdown. Peter Graves narrates this early look at the recovery.

I got treated to a gorgeous northern lights show while flying over Canada last night.
Circular band of bright green aurora in a dark sky. Lights from a town are far below.A zig zag of green aurora ends in an extra bright dot.A bright green curve of aurora lights up clouds below. A less defined green blob sits above it.

Outlines of different animals (lined up by the tail end so that a size comparison can be made). They are Balaenoptera musculus - 30 m (blue whale, thankfully not yet extinct), Brachiosaurus altithorax - 24 m, Triceratops horridus - 8.2 m, Mammuthus primigenius - 5.2 m (wooly mammoth), Smiloson fatalis - 2.1 m. An human adult and child are shown on the right for scale. The title at the top says Balaenoptera musculus is 14x the lenth of Smilodon fatalis.

Hummingbirds.
A four panel comic. In panel 1, a rufous hummingbird flies down toward a large hummingbird feeder with as many as 6 holes on top. He thinks "The humans put up a new feeder!" In panel 2, he lands on the feeder and gazes down at it. He thinks "It's huge. Many of us could feed here at once." In panel 3, we see a close up view of the hummingbird, and he's thinking "This could end the ancient rivalries. Usher in an era of peace. Interesting." In panel 4, an Anna's hummingbird hovers over the feeder and says "Hey, can I have some necta-" and the rufous hummingbird says "No."
