@saanichbc.bsky.social just curious, the large high voltage line towers crossing through beckwith park and neighborhood. Some of them have a footing dug up and covered with plastic. What's the project going on for these? Thanks!

Small M2.1 earthquake beneath Orcas Island just after 5:30 AM this morning. Unlikely to be felt at a depth of 57 km, but a good reminder we live above an active Subduction Zone. Beautifully picked up across the local seismic networks, including at a number of schools.

While we are still seeing aftershocks from the M7.0 Hubbard Glacier event on December 6th in SW Yukon, a friendly reminder that down in Victoria we also live in Earthquake Country. These events are unlikely to have been felt, as they are small and relatively deep in the crust of the upper plate.

Preliminary NLL-SC relocation of M7 Dec 6 #Alaska #Yukon Hubbard Glacier #earthquakes and seismicity since 2020. Hubbard events fall in void in earlier seismicity, show clear SE-NW trend, and suggest main rupture was ~vertical (strike-slip?) at SE and complex or dipping (toward NE??) to the NW.

Regarding the earthquakes near the greek island of #Santorini there a few things to know. #Earthquake swarms are common throughout the aegean, and usually they end without causing problems. So there is a high likelyhood that nothing will happen. However, there are several potential issues. 1/7

New paper alert! 🧪⛏️ Led by the amazing @spacequakes.bsky.social, here's a seismologically ordinary earthquake that got outsized attention due to some misinformation. It was cool to be a small part of this work! Open access in @weareseismica.bsky.social : seismica.library.mcgill.ca/article/view...
Screencap of top of research article from journal Seismica, titled "The propagation of seismic waves, misinformation, and disinformation from the 2024-10-05 M 4.5 Iran earthquake" by Benjamin Fernando, Ross Maguire, Brianna Fernandez, Saman Karimi, Elizabeth Koenck, Göran Ekström, Tom Rivlin, & Celeste Labedz.
Abstracts in English & Persian:
"The 2024-10-05 Iran M 4.5 earthquake took place at a time of heightened tensions in the Middle East. We perform a discrimination and moment tensor analysis and identify a shallow-dipping, reverse fault source commensurate with the compressional setting of the Iranian interior. Nonetheless, the event's aftermath saw widespread dissemination of misinformation, and potentially active disinformation, concluding that it was in fact a test of an Iranian nuclear weapon. The `evidence' for many of these claims was based on inaccurate interpretation of seismic data. In this paper, we analyse how geophysical `fake news' propagated through social media (mainly Twitter/X) following this event, eventually gaining traction in mainstream, earned media. This event is an illustrative warning of how seismic data can be misinterpreted and/or manipulated in public discourse."

Even when you know how magnitudes work and so how big a M9 earthquake would be, it's still hard to fully fathom an event like 1700 Cascadia. The rupture area is just SO huge.
ShakeMap of a scenario M9.0 earthquake on the Cascadia Subduction Zone. The "extreme" shaking intensity goes from northern California all the way up through Vancouver Island, decreasing in intensity inland, but it's still at "strong" shaking intensity 300 km inland from the coast. A key at the bottom shows the intensity scale key from "not felt" up to "extreme"
