🌍 Earth’s interior can be scanned like a CAT scan — using seismic waves! 🌊 Oceans lack seismometers, leaving blind spots ❌ 🤖 Now, 49 underwater robots in the South Pacific fill the gaps, boosting resolution & efficiency 1000×! 🔗 Read: seismica.library.mcgill.ca/article/view...
The inset shows a MERMAID underwater seismograph just after launch, its antenna still sticking above the surface, against a background of the Baie de Aotupa⁩ in ⁨French Polynesia⁩. The MERMAIDs float passively with the ocean current, typically at a depth of 1500m, and come to the surface to transmit seismograms in quasi-real time after detecting an earthquake. Such robots provide an affordable solution to the dearth of seismometers in the oceanic domain, especially in the Southern hemisphere, which still hampers global seismic tomography (Credit: Frederik Simons, Princeton University).
