AEW has unfortunately been put in the position to memorialize a fallen wrestler many times. They do it with a full and honest embrace of grief and loss of the real human being, not just the wrestler. I'm thankful for the care and space they give the roster and the fans to mourn.

This creates absolute minefields for anyone who is a member of an underrepresented group: racism, sexism, and bigotry that you never even know about can absolutely tank your career. All it takes is for an influential senior person to say "I don't think they're very good" or "they're not serious."

One of the most harrowing things about academia, when you're a grad student, is how vulnerable you are to how you're perceived by more senior researchers. Your career advancement depends on confidential letters of reference & private discussions amongst faculty. You have no information or control.

We talk a lot in the U.S. abt working class white Americans undermining their own interests in various ways, but it is striking to see how the ruling class will destroy itself rather than concede the right of others to live with dignity.

I’m definitely defensive on behalf of romance writers and readers cos so often comics are lumped in the “not real books” category so I will absolutely call bullshit on anyone belittling them. 🙏

What the fuck, Joyce. I don’t even read romance novels but this kind of thinking pisses me the fuck off. It further pushes that mentality that some books as “lesser” which is bullshit! All books count!
Joyce Carol Oates
This is why Al-generated romance novels make perfect sense. Formulaic fiction doesn't need to be written by hand, so to speak; what difference does it make if a machine "writes" it? There are machine-made clothes & there are custom-made clothes. They appeal to different consumers.

The point of suppressing information about queer and trans people is that more of us do not successfully make it to adulthood alive, have adult lives of meaning and happiness. That's genuinely the goal. They want us to die. I'm never going to be on team "why can't queers just hide and be hidden"

What the leadership of Vanderbilt and Washington U are wishing to do with the commission of their series of reports against current humanities and social science scholarship is the following. Take the butter off the bread of right-wing anti-university think tanks.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

CA keeps failing to pass anything that could have a material impact on the ruling class. Rent control, ending prison slavery, gig worker protections, prop 13 reform. We physically cannot knock on enough doors to compete with the blizzard of mailers and media buys, nor the “liberal” cachet behind it.

You can read the pro-segregation goals in a lot of their founding documents. Fraternities are one of the classic examples used in sociological theories cynical about institutional change. The older a fraternity, the more likely they are to still have documents that explicitly ban Black members.

This is a reminder that the fraternity system was created to oppose race and gender integration on college campuses. White men who wanted to keep their schools—and all the power that comes with college education—to themselves. It is not a coincidence that they are hotbeds of violence.

When I was teaching, so many white parents were raising "gentle/sensitive" but selfish sons by asking for special treatment. "He was sad you didn't call on him today, could you call on him first tomorrow?" Always a lesson about using words, but never a lesson that sometimes it's other people's turn.

There are a lot of parents focused on getting gentleness *for* their sons, but not expecting their sons to show gentleness to anyone else. And that’s just male entitlement in liberal window dressing.
