For people not aware: Lemuria is a spec evo project of the #paleostream community. It follows the evolution of organisms living on the fictional continent of Lemuria (fusion of Madagascar and India) from the Cretaceous to the Pleistocene. We are now in the Pleistocene. #LemuriaChallenge

...organisms settle here, and of course the abundance of prey brings with it predators, like sharks, other whales, predatory dugongs or snish (fish like snakes). Penguins and plotopterids follow the schools of fish as well and so this first piece sets the stage for things to come...

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a kid stands in front of his science fair presentation on a three-sided cardboard display. The display reads: When I grow up, I want to be… THE LARGEST SEA CREATURE. Panel 2: the kid, now matured, is walking into the ocean confidently. He’s turned back toward the shore, smiling and waving at his parents who are standing a few meters behind him, right where the water meets the shore. They’re waving back to him. Panel 3: from a bird’s eye view the kid can be seen under the surface of the water. He’s massive and only a portion of his face is in frame. His father, who appears older, is paddling alone in a canoe above his son’s submerged gigantic face.

It might not be intentional but the murky, hazy atmosphere within the dioramas almost feels like a visual representation of trying to look through the depth of time to see the past. If so, it’s a brilliant approach to palaeoart that I’ve only seen a handful of other times.

Paleo person here: beaver tail bones actually have those broad flat bits that stick out, those are not normal for tail bones! Bone shapes actually show us how muscle and soft tissue attaches, hence why we know weight estimates for animals like T. rex! For researchers, deduction is very important!

Today’s four random pieces of palaeoart: Zdenek Burian’s Protoceratops, Brian Franczak’s Wuerhosaurus, Richard Orr’s Allosaurus, and Michael Berenstain’s Pterodactylus!
A group of heavyset, sprawling Protoceratops stand amid a tangle of vegetation on a stony hill.A striding stegosaur with a striking yellow and black pattern and low, squared-off plates. Two red and blue Allosaurus with dumpy, pear-shaped torsos and slim but defined muscles tear into the carcass of some largely unseen green dinosaur.A brown, sleek pterosaur with narrow and sharpely defined wings soars high above a sandy lagoon. A red crab struggles in its mouth and numerous other pterosaurs fly or walk about in the background.
