Today's four random pieces of palaeoart: Bernard Long's Andrewsarchus, Brian Franczak's Nanotyrannus, Dmitry Bogdanov's Edaphosaurus, and Steve Kirk's Apatosaurus!
A long, low-slung, wolf-like Andrewsarchus with a coat resembling a red fox. It trots across a rocky hill carrying a bone in its toothy jaws.A pair of gracile, small tyrannosaurs stand in a tangled forest. One looks in the direction of the viewer, while the other looks off at something out of view. One has a pattern composed of chocolate brown and creamy white, while the other complements this with a blue throat, yellow brow, and black-streaked head. A green Edaphosaurus with a bright red sail rests atop an outcrop in a steamy swamp. A forest of enormous horsetails forms a backdrop.A hefty, blue-grey Apatosaurus walks through a sandy clearing in a cycad forest. Its broad neck sweeps to its left, taking notice of some low-lying greenery. Its whip-like tail flicks behind it, moving in sinuous curls.

I don't know how many of you have seen Lawrence of Arabia lately, but a line that's intrigued me but have never really grasped is "A man cannot want what he likes, this is the stuff that decides what he wants". i'd interested in anybody else's takes on the line if you've seen it.

Two panel comic. Panel 1: a bat hangs upside-down from a telephone line at sunset. The bat is in front of a billboard advertising the Florida Mega Jackpot, which is valued at $5,318,008 - represented with a digital ticker. Panel 2: the POV flips to the bat’s upside-down perspective, which makes the digital numbers look like they spell “BOOBIES”. The bat appears delighted.

What in the name of Beetlejuice ARE these things? They're zebra morphs of 'squat lobsters', likely in genus Allogalathea. They're not true lobsters & are more closely related to hermit crabs. Now which one is white with black stripes & which is black with white stripes? (📷: hoopderscotch)

This is a canary resuscitator, which miners would use to revive canaries that had passed out from toxic gas, because ideally not only do you care, you don't even leave the bird behind. just a little mining history and not at all a furious scream

Today's four random pieces of palaeoart: Rudolph Zallinger's Iguanodon and Parasaurolophus, Brian Choo's Yutyrannus, Mark Hallett's Stegosaurus and Kentrosaurus, and Karen Carr's Tenontosaurus!
Two scenes, one featuring Iguanodon and another featuring Parasaurolophus. Both are shown in towering, tail-dragging poses, with strongly flexed arms and subtly curved necks. Both have brown hides with yellowish undersides. The Iguanodon's skin sports several greenish splotches. It stands on a lush hillside decorated with ferns and pink flowers at midday. The Parasaurolophus stands besides a vegetation-choked lake, cast in warm tones by a setting sun.Portrait of a Yutyrannus with reddish feathering and yellow, keratinous horns and snout ridges. Its orange eyes are squinted, obscuring their orange hue. Numerous long-snouted longipterygid birds alight on its head and neck, plucking parasites from it like oxpeckers on a buffalo.A brown Stegosaurus with dark streaks and splotches decorating its skin strides alongside a Kentrosaurus with a two-toned red and baby blue pattern. The heavyset build of the Stegosaurus contrasts with the comparatively slim Kentrosaurus. Two wrinkly grey Tenontosaurus slurp water from a pool of deep blue water. In the hazy dark behind, the forms of several sauropods stretch into the dark, cloud-streaked sky.

Today’s four random pieces of palaeoart: Peter Schouten’s Myotragus, John Sibbick’s Sinosauropteryx, Bob Walters’ Ceratosaurus and Camarasaurus, and @lacerdajulio.bsky.social’s Mammuthus!
A densely furred, brownish goat with a stocky body and short limbs stands atop a rocky hillside. Its backswept horns deflect slightly outward from its flat skull, giving it a distinguished look. A protofeathery Sinosauropteryx with a bright yellow face zooms past, carrying the carcass of a lizard in its clawed hands.A brown, spiky-backed Ceratosaurus prowls behind the partially eaten carcass of a green and yellow Camarasaurus, whose head hangs over a small rocky drop off. A pair of bull mammoths crash into each other on a grassy steppe, trunks meeting as the curls of their tusks wrap around each others heads in a violent embrace.

This week on #RunawaytotheStars: Tragic irony, and epic babies reveal. Catch up: runawaytothestars.com Read ahead: patreon.com/jayrockin
Verengt: Do you know what they think of us? Talita: It's... similar? Your relaxed eyes and lips actually look like an "angry" expression to them. Talita points at her face, relaxing her eyes into a half-lidded position and her lip corners into a droop. The impression is similar to a human glower or displeased frown. Verengt: Is that why you're doing all this with your eyelids⁇   Their trunk curls into a smile, and they mimic the expressions Talita makes with her nictitating membranes, gesturing similarly with a hand. Verengt: I thought you were just very anxious! Talita glances away in embarrassment, rubbing her neck with a hand. Talita: Er... Well… It may be both. Verengt: I've never met another dwaull like you. I look forward to talking more!Talita's expression falls. Talita: I’m so sorry, I don’t know what Mel told you… But I’m actually… leaving this place. Tonight. Verengt: Ah, so we won’t be working with you? Talita: No… Verengt: A shame! But we would never keep you from traveling. Talita: Is there any way I could contact you from space? I hate to leave you without any help adjusting to the job. Verengt grimaces and reaches underneath the cloak covering their back. Verengt: Partwack… my children are better with alien technology than me…Verengt: But I do have this… They lift their cloak, briefly revealing the six larvae clinging to their back. They are round and chubby with vertical stripes, and each is chewing on the end of a silk thread produced from a pair of spinnerets emerging where a tail would be on a mammal. Talita looks down at them in delight and wonder. Verengt pulls a phone out of their pocket and drops the cape, peering at the screen with a monocle corded to the phone case. Verengt: If you give me the number of your phone, I can send messages to it. Talita: Oh! Yes! Of course. Verengt pops the monocle into the socket on the back of their phone and hands it to Talita, who enters her phone number on the screen's extremely large text input. She hands it back to Verengt. Talita: If you have any questions at all, contact me. The equipment is designed for humans, so you to have to be creative to get some of it to work.Verengt: I will send messages to you, Talita. Have a safe migration! They step back to rejoin the three other centaurs, making a downwards gesture with an open palm. The other three repeat the gesture. Talita is slightly confused, but beaming with a returned trunk smile anyways. Talita: ...Yeah! Talita walks with a fleet of autonomously driven trucks full of luggage through the plant, and out towards the main airlock. There, near the same lockers that Talita used to suit up with the temp workers, Idrisah and Gillie are putting on their company-assigned exosuits. Talita: Sorry I'm late. Idrisah: No problem, you're... Ugh! She fumbles the ring of the hip gasket and her pants drop down to her knees, dangling by a fluid cooling linkup. Talita smiles, this time with her mouth. Talita: Need help? Idrisah looks at her, apologetic. Idrisah: Yes please.

This week on #RunawaytotheStars: A tapetum lucidum is a kind of mirror. Catch up: runawaytothestars.com Read ahead: patreon.com/jayrockin
Talita finishes packing the cart in the puddle of light by the apartment building's front entrance, then is startled by a movement to her left. Emerging from the darkness between the two buildings are four large shadows, with 7 eerie eyes flashing the artificial light back towards her. It's Verengt and 3 other centaurs, all barely visible silhouettes. One of them points their trunk to the matriarch and whispers something, causing them to take notice of Talita. Talita looks back at them, apprehensive. Her own pupils reflect the light too, the uneven angle causing one to glow, and the other to mostly remain dark. Verengt walks toward Talita out of the darkness, their body gaining detail as they slowly become illuminated by the door lights.Verengt approaches Talita, who is hunched fearfully over the cart. Verengt: Talita. Good evening. Talita straightens up and nervously touches her neck. Verengt's trunk points up in a loose curl. Talita: H- hi Verengt! I need to apologize for earlier, I– Verengt: No, we should apologize. I believe we misinterpreted you. Do you speak human language with your face, as well as your trunk? They gesture with an open palm over their own face.Talita: Oh! …Yes, I do! Verengt: Showing teeth means something very different to them, doesn't it? Talita: Humans pull their lips up and bare their teeth to show they're happy or friendly.   She points at her face and pulls her lips back into a quick smile that mostly shows gums. Talita: I've lived with them so long that I do it habitually. Verengt: I see. I usually look for a trunk curl... They lift their trunk upwards in a relaxed curl. Verengt: Do humans not know what this means? Talita returns the curl, with a small closed-lip smile. Talita: No, they usually don’t. Verengt looks off thoughtfully. Verengt: They always seem so unfriendly to me, with their flat nose and teeth flashing as they speak. But I suppose that's just how they're built…

Today’s four random pieces of palaeoart: @literallymiguel.bsky.social’s Postosuchus, Brian Franczak’s “Seismosaurus” (Diplodocus), Ely Kish’s Pachycephalosaurus, and @lacerdajulio.bsky.social’s Pteranodon!
A green-grey Postosuchus prowls through a dense forest, dappled with streaks of light filtering through the leaves above. Its robust skull is turned to the side, giving a menacing view of its impressive jaws.A colossal grey diplodocid ambles through a floodplain, passing a group of little, dark ornithischians. Behind, a forest of thin-trunked trees with palm-like tops stretch across the horizon. A cloudy sky extends far above it all, giving the scene a somber dreariness.A rain-drenched tropical forest during a downpour. The leafy fronds of various plants heave with the weight of the rain. Tucked beneath a broad leaf, the tiny green head of a dome-headed dinosaur peeks out.An enormous blue-beaked Pteranodon soars low over azure waves, accompanied by a flock of gull-like ichthyornithean birds. A pair of hesperornitheans with loon-like patterns bob atop the water. Behind, ominous clouds portend a coming storm.

I don’t think I love anything as much as the surreal, alien palaeoart of the 70s into the early 90s. These compositions are all naturalistic, but they’re strange and hypernatural in a way that transcends realism. It’s a bizarre but profoundly moving approach to reconstructing the past.
A quilled Velociraptor with tightly folded arms stands atop a pile of loose stones, backed by an intensive purple and orange sunset.A leathery-winged, white-furred Dimorphodon with red legs soars above rough waves. In the distance, jutting stones pierce a sulphurous sky. A red-headed Albertosaurus moves alongside a herd of Lambeosaurus, splashing through a shallow woodland stream. The sky is a smoky blue with wisps of clouds strewn about. The massive form of a colossal asteroid hovers menacingly above it all.An emaciated Triceratops with ragged skin sits in a low squat, shown in stark white against an almost entirely black composition. A cutaway view shows a tangle of roots piercing deep into the ground, a visual representation of the sickness penetrating the dinosaurs body.
