I love the different evolutionary paths megalosaurs, allosaurs, and ceratosaurs went down, despite them all having familiar big, serrated-toothed, dinosaur flesh-ripping species throughout the Jurassic. (Art credits in alt-text)

There is apparently an emergency protest today at the Constitution Center (525 Arch St) against Drexel. Unfortunately I won't be able to make it, but if you're nearby and CAN make it on such short notice, I encourage you to go. Objective: detach Drexel from the ANSP.

This review suggests that large prey may be energetically viable for forest leopards, as they face direct competition for small prey from African golden cats and humans for medium-sized prey.

During my last day at the Academy of Natural Sciences, I found this vintage T. rex toy that was eerily similar to one I had as a kid. Down to the chopped off hand.

Funny thing is, even if you told my little kid self from 20 years ago what kind of state I'd find American paleontology to be in now, what with two natural history museums in jeopardy of ceasing to exist...I STILL don't think that would've discouraged me from trying to enter.

There is an 1869 account of a tiger and a sun bear that were supposedly found dead clinging to each other. I remembered it from my Carnivora forum days, and I think even back then people (understandably) raised eyebrows at it. Take it with a grain of salt.

I love that the ANSP’s time machine display used Hall Train’s dinosaur models in its last several days open to the public. These are the ones I saw in that feature as a kid, and before I familiarized myself with who made these, it was magical.

I was searching for something on a Discord server and remembered this one time a few years ago someone tried to tell me orcas don't really ambush prey, and that it was "[my] personal interpretation [that one might do so to a great white]". Lmao

VERY interesting study. These are in vivo bite force measurements for spectacled bears, sun bears, and a lioness. The maximal forces for the bears are rear molar bites, whereas that of the lioness is an incisor bite.

Here's a shower thought that's been in my head since late last year, and maybe it's something you all think has an obvious answer. What if size discrepancy is not the only factor that determines how "impressive" an act or attempt at predation is? 🧵

Has Drexel actually said 'no' to the William Penn Foundation's offer to fund the Academy of Natural Sciences for a year? IIRC Drexel hasn't addressed that specifically yet, but if they flat-out refuse, it should erase any doubt in people's minds that it's about "money issues".

This biomechanical study found that their Psittacosaurus specimen was unsuited for jugal horn stabbing behaviors. The specimen they analyzed was the one pictured here. The jugal horns aren’t *terribly* developed in this specimen.

Btw there’s still a gap between Pampaluctor and the oldest confirmed felids (so not counting Smilodontidium) in South America. The red arrow is about where Pampaluctor would be, whereas previously thylacosmilids wouldn’t have gone past the Chapadmalan.

I found clips of an old BBC Rancho La Brea documentary from my childhood. To my shock, they got the fighting fossilized mammoths right. Not only each having a broken tusk on the same side, but none of the erroneous eye-gouging often claimed or depicted in some paleoart.

I was in 2nd grade on a field trip; we were learning about dinosaurs at the time. I saw this and several other giant dinosaur skeletons in the hall, including, at the time, a Giganotosaurus skeleton on top of the rotunda. This defined a natural history museum for me.

A 36.8 cm, 1.12 kg black piranha (see table 1 of this study) had a bite force of 320 N. This is nearly 3x that of an equivalent sized American alligator.
