the AI story won't end with either a super intelligence enslaving humanity or some "life of abundance"-utopia. it'll end the way these things always end. the bubble will burst. the economy will tank. the tech moguls will golden-parachute onto their super yachts. normies will pick up the pieces.

Google AI admits that google dropped the "Don't" from "Don't be evil".

Having fun jamming with myself tonight. First, I recorded the kick and bass. Then I overdubbed the chords. Finally, I recorded the rest of the drum sounds.

Once again: LLMs are word-association algorithms. They are incapable of grokking that the words they parse correspond to actual objects & phenomena outside of their own algorithms. To an LLM, its statements depend not on facts but on how often words occur together in the material the're trained on.

I think Ai chatbots passing the Turing test is impressive, in the same way that a magician passing a coin through a solid oak table is impressive. But the thing is, magicians can't actually pass coins through tables; their skill is in making it seem that they can.

I'm an "A.i." abolitionist. No consumer-facing LLMs or generative "A.i." in anything. Sure, machine learning in science and a few other limited applications is fine. But consumer-facing LLMs and generative "A.i." that are based on theft, push disinfo, and can be manipulated by billionaires? No.

I just reviewed an obviously AI-generated manuscript. Dear editors, these are not difficult to identify. Please spare your reviewers. We are already overworked, and if you send us AI-bullshit, we are forced to spend time explaining why the paper should be rejected. You could simply desk reject it.

About all I rely on AI for is definitions of terms or concepts that I already know, but want a grammatically tight explanation of. And than I go back and check that all of the details were right to begin with from other sources, because JFC it still gets the simplest stuff wrong from.

me after a slow day on my Peloton
From pope Leo: In our competitive society, where it seems that only the strong and winners deserve to live, sport also teaches us how to lose. It forces us, in learning the art of losing, to confront our fragility, our limitations and our imperfections. It is through the experience of these limits that we open our hearts to hope. Athletes who never make mistakes, who never lose, do not exist.

Apparently the Romans managed the water from their aquaducts by prioritising public drinking fountains, then public baths, and rich people's houses last. Reading about the vast energy demands of future AI, I think we need that for energy. Poorest ppl first, luxury AI video cat memes last.

Vital point here. The frames of political discourse — which are shaped by the structure of the info environment and by both strategic & organic communication — shape how people interpret their own experiences. We're not dealing with a problem of bad "facts" ... but one of corrupted sensemaking.
