Since we have crossed over into the month of thinning veils between this world and the dead, The Shape of Monsters is the perfect read for the season. It has murder, twisted magic, fucked-up deer, dead things watching from the woods, creepy gothic mansions, and licorice jellybeans

WTF!?!? Not only is this cheap, awful, AI slop, it is racist and antisemitic! Ten years ago this would have ended a political career. What world are we living in that the Tories can just put this out there and get away with it? And I don't believe the 88 feet is a coincidence for one second.

I was talking to my friend Mae today about how I wish more people cared about and read short stories. A great short story will take only twenty minutes to read but stick with you for twenty years. Wildly powerful artform! What's a short story that fits that description for y'all?

The ability to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into a loss-making TV channel, bent on wrenching British politics sharply to the right, is yet another of the ways in which extreme wealth is trying to remake UK democracy. It needs to be part of any serious conversation about political funding.

It's been a really shitty day, including a handful of story rejections, so it would make me very happy if you went and read my story that just came out in Sterncastle. Honestly, even if you hate it, I would still be thrilled to know you read it.

Queer authors, if you will be publishing a book on ITCH DOT IO and/or KOBO PLUS between now and Dec 31, please make that book known to me below. Especially if you're not publishing on the Evil River! Pre-order link is best, itch profile is great (so I can follow you), or whatever ya got. 🌈📚

Anyone trying to co-opt bisexuality as the terfy alternative to pansexuality is an asshole and wrong. Remember that some of our foundational queer, bisexual lionesses were Black trans women.

Wondering - lots of authors, even traditionally published ones have promotional material they bring to events. Banners, commissioned art, bookmarks, stickers, I like these things. They are fun and pretty. As a reader, are you more likely to buy a new to you book/author if it comes with a bookmark?

A three panel meme of someone riding a bike then putting a stick between the spokes of their own front wheel and falling over. The captions read: panel 1, riding a bike, 'doing amazing qualitative data collection'; panel 2, putting stick in own wheel, 'choosing AI transcription tools to get your transcripts'; panel 3, fallen off bike holding hurt leg, 'spending 40+ hours checking every line of every transcript manually instead of literally anything else.'

I have a core memory of doing creative writing in English at school and writing a number (e.g. 457) and being told it's not a maths class, write the number out (four hundred and fifty seven). What do people think? Do you write numbers or words in your stories? Or both?

Our society's unfathomable cruelty to homeless people is not just morally unjustifiable, but more expensive than housing people would be. Cruelty against the homeless is an unaffordable luxury. Abandoning homeless people to avoid offending the Protestant work ethic is an unaffordable luxury.

It's important to remember that the police's actual main objective is to uphold the state. That's what's going on here when they don't arrest people supporting the state's anti immigrant narrative, and when they arrest grannies who oppose a genocide supported by the state.

Journalists need to stop describing these incidents in terms implying software has agency and intent. It does not. The people who created a faulty and dangerous product are the ones responsible for whatever happens, and must be held to account, with punitive financial penalties for damage done.

AI is part of a class war. The rich are buying art made by artists, putting their kids in private schools with excellent teacher/pupil ratios, not allowing their own kids to use smart phones etc . They want us stupider, surrounded by slop - pigs at the trough. Stop giving them what they want.

I'm seeing several posts regarding luck versus skill. I do believe a lot of luck plays a part in publishing. What I would add to this equation is: the system. The thing is, you can have skill and luck can happen, but, to use a gambling metaphor, if you aren't allowed in a casino, you can't bet.
