These data centers are financial poison even if you bought them cheap. The returns are awful, the debt is toxic, the ongoing opex is nasty because of the cost of cooling and the power demands, and 30% gross margins requires near-perfect conditions and constant revenue for 5+ years.

It’s just a matter of time now, and mostly a matter of when the money runs out. There is no future for Anthropic or OpenAI at their current scale. Hyperscalers need $308bn of annual ai revenue - around the revenue of Microsoft - for 10% return on 2026 and 2027 capex. Could be more with cost of debt.

This strikes me is a common misunderstanding of the argument for humanities education, which is not that it serves as some sort of individual inoculation, but rather than it produces a citizenry more capable of self-governance when distributed widely, especially for decision-makers of every kind.

I didn't. But I sure did grin. I was volunteering with @environmentalvoter.bsky.social . EVP estimates 11.2 million people whose top issue is the environment skipped the 2024 election. Midterms are worse. And when environmentalists don't vote, politicians don't vote for the environment.

Last week I called up a stranger, an environmentalist who didn't vote. She was 82, couldn't drive to the polls anymore, and didn't know Maine now lets any voter sign up to get a mail ballot automatically for every election. I explained how. She was thrilled. "Take yourself to lunch!" she cried.

Higher Education is not just about training workers, but also about training citizen leaders and good citizenship in part means thinking that the details matter, that getting them right matters, because it impacts some of your fellow citizens. "It only matters if job" is poison to citizenship.

If you're a Dem who thinks you'll gain something by going anti-trans, look at Gallup's "most important problem" and Fox News' "most important issue" polling and see where trans issues rank. Whoever told you going anti-trans is a savvy or necessary move spends too much time on X and should be fired.

This is exactly the thing. Trans rights are worth defending because trans people are worth defending and, also, simultaneously, at the same time, the very basic statistical truth is that the overwhelming majority of people harmed by mandated & enforced gender norms are not going to be trans.
