My latest @newscientist.com cartoon
Panel 1: a large robot (composed of AI servers, network switches, storage arrays, and power distribution units) and a human are talking.

Professor "You don't want to destroy humanity do you, lLLM-A-9300x?"

Robot "Haha. What a silly question, Professor. I have no desires or feelings of my own whatsoever."

Professor (relieved)"Oh good."

Panel 2: they walk on. The robot continues "I am merely a tool of the company that created me. And that company, being composed of humans, will naturally have humanity's best interests at heart."

Panel 3: The professor is conspicuously quiet.
"Right?" says the Robot.
…
More silence

"Professor?"

Four days ago, a scientist was surprised by the news that Anthropic discovered new virus genes for making DNA. He says he’s been studying them for years—and feeding his data to Anthropic’s AI as part of his own research. Coincidence? Here’s my story. nyti.ms/3VSWayc

I hear a lot about the difficulty in publishing negative replications, but what about publishing / funding positive replications? In a world where many fast-paced claims later falter, there should be more glory to coming in second in an important race. We don't know until an expert community knows.

Once you're trapped inside the Standard Model, there's no way out... until now. Agent Higgs 2 - my particle physics puzzle game is out today! Electrons, protons, photons, and more! The particles may be small, but big forces are at play. On PC/Mac/Linux/Android/iOS testtubegames.com/higgs2.html
Movie poster titled Agent Higgs 2: Escape from the Standard Model. Underneath a red Higgs boson wearing groucho marx glasses is surrounded by a variety of particles and blue characters. Underneath, the tagline: time for another run. The particles are listed by name underneath, like actors in a movie poster. At the bottom: Coming August 28, 2026.Level in Agent Higgs 2, titled Electricity 8. Agent Higgs and a mysterious figure are both in a room with many crates. An electron and proton seem to be attracting with the help of a photon. The figure says: "The scientists caught you last time... but with my help you'll never get trapped again!"Cartoon image of a collectible card - with a scared character at the top saying "What happened?!" The card title is Electric Repulsion and it has an image of two electrons repelling in the game. The text says: The electric force will make like electric charges repel. This force is stronger than the swiping force. Under that there's a stick figure character who is literally a stick who says: Sticky the Stickler Says... No distance dependence... and only cardinal directions?!

This is a slice from DESI’s large 3D map of the Universe. You can see galaxies and quasars as bright points spread above and below the Milky Way. Earth sits in the center of the view. A black area blocks the light from behind our own galaxy. The small inset shows the web-like pattern of galaxies and voids. The farthest light we see here left its source 11 billion years ago.
