You bolt wake in the Casa do Infante, Porto. It is 1417. You are Prince Henry the Navigator, and you have changed your mind. The future cannot come to pass. Your ships must not sail south, Europe must never find the Spice Isles.

Happy #SocialistSunday comrades ✊🏻
Four-panel political cartoon. An older white man in a suit warns two workers, one Black, one white, "Careful. That foreigner wants your cookie." While he distracts them, the workers wrestle the plate of cookies away from him and ultimately share them peacefully together.

Today is July 25th, often celebrated as the fall of Italian fascism. Mussolini passed draconian controls over pasta production which he considered decadent and overly reliant on foreign grain. Today, we celebrate his fall with a simple, defiant partisan dish: 1) Pasta 2) Creamy butter 3) Parmesan

I didn't think this was controversial but a basic need of everyone living in NZ is, in fact, to be aware of natural hazards around you and have plans for your household or workplace in the event that there is an emergency and comms don't work. Don't expect to be able to load the website after AF8.

This is pretty well known, but the Australian flag Sam Neill wore on his uniform in Event Horizon was designed at his request to show the Union Jack replaced with the Aboriginal flag, because he hoped in the future this is how it would actually look. A proper fucken ally in every way, this bloke.
Sam Neill on profile in EVENT HORIZON, with a patch on his jacket that shows the Australian flag but with the Union Jack replaced with the Aboriginal flag, because fuck colonialism and Sam knew that this always was, always will be, Aboriginal land

Can't prove this but maybe the reason for Attenborough's longevity is that whenever Paddington arrives to shepherd his soul on, he fends him off with his powers of nature narration. "The perplexed ursine psychopomp withdraws, his hunt unsuccessful. Perhaps a 1970s bass player will make easier prey."

🔭 A cautionary tale for undergrads (and above!) using AI for #astro plots: our BSc student wanted to make a "quick" HR diagram showcasing M-dwarfs & thought some chatbot could make one and... well... ...extra credits are now offered to students who can correctly find all errors on cursedHR.png 🫠 🧪
A pathetic attempt by AI sloppery to make a HR diagram, generated by one of our BSc student, and shared here with their permission. Honestly, I can't even begin to explain all the deviations. Imagine a normal HR diagram but one that appears to you in a fever dream. It gets so much worse the longer you look at it. WHY IS THIS ALLOWED TO EXIST AAAAA

Since early-March there has been an interesting sequence of larger earthquakes happening about halfway between Raoul Island and the North Island of New Zealand. They went on for a couple weeks in March, quieted down for a couple weeks, and then picked up again in early-April. 🧪
