My primary care physician is not a neurologist. He doesn't understand the difference between sadness and damage. I do not like this man. He refuses adjectives. He wants me to say My pain is eight, instead of Thunderous and unsettling. When he says You'll be fine, I have to explain that I won't because I've never been fine, but I'm not saying it right. It concerns him, my attitude. I think many people struggle with my aesthetic. I am back at the first hospital, the one that said I wasn't having a stroke. This is where insurance sent me. The first time I saw this man, once I got out of the hospital, he also didn't believe I had a stroke and wouldn't refill my prescriptions. The hospitals weren't sharing my charts. He watched me struggle with my walker as I went down the long hall to the elevators, thinking I was faking it. The second time, I had a crying jag that started in the waiting room. I kept crying while the nurse weighed me and took my blood pressure. The doctor kept talking about sadness, not nerves damage. He would not increase the dose of the muscle relaxant. He did not want to discuss spasticity. He thought I was showing drug-seeking behavior. Throw a rattle, a baby would. Chew off your leg, an animal would. This is the third time I have been in this office. My pain is eight. I am speaking in his language. He isn't listening.

When we talk about the threat of AI superintelligence, we’re not talking about how chatbots are aiding mass shooters. We’re not talking about how chatbot dependence is pushing people into mental health spirals and threatening people’s ability to learn and think critically. We’re not talking about the women and children who are victims of non-consensual deepfakes or how AI-generated false information is flooding social media platforms, sometimes just for profit, but other times for much more nefarious reasons.

That’s not to mention to threat to jobs in a whole range of sectors, or how employers are rolling out AI tools to further surveil and deskill workers. It’s also doesn’t get to the other major aspect of all those AI tools: the growing controversy around the hyperscale data centers needed to power them and the whole range of social and environmental consequences that accompany them.

The media is compromised in many ways. It’s stuffed full of tech optimists who want to believe the narratives of industry figures, alongside people who crave access above all else and know their bread is buttered by staying in the industry’s pocket. But you also have people who really don’t understand digital technology much at all, and certainly not artificial intelligence, so when an influential tech figure is making catastrophic warnings, the tendency is to believe them. After all, they wouldn’t be so wealthy and powerful if they couldn’t be trusted, right? But media also relies on audiences, and the sensationalism of claims that AI could destroy humanity has proven impossible to resist, even for many outlets that should know better.

If the media cared about factuality over sensationalism, it wouldn’t be echoing the lies of the tech industry. Instead it would challenge the self-serving narrative they’re trying to sell to the public. It may seem as though presenting your product as dangerous would be bad for your company, but all it does in practice for AI companies is make them more powerful. Somehow, they’re treated as having the answers to the supposed problems they’re creating, thus shifting the regulatory conversation away from real issues to imagined threats.

For the past several weeks, we’ve been treated to breathless coverage of the supposed major threat presented by artificial intelligence. If we’re to believe the titans of the AI industry and the media reports mindlessly echoing their every utterance, humanity’s years may be numbered.

It’s not because of climate change and how we’re actively making our planet less fit for human habitation. Indeed, many of these prophets of AI doom don’t actually believe climate change is much of a threat at all. It’s also not because increasingly unstable geopolitics is shifting the world toward greater conflict and the risk of global war.

One of BBM's most egregious practices has been its use of fake writers to byline content, a practice it's employed for years in its quest to scale. These fabricated writers have included made-up domain experts, fake journalists, and fake essayists publishing emotional first-person anecdotes.

Over the past few years, BBM has pioneered a remarkably cynical business model. First it buys online publications that have established themselves as offering a distinctive type of journalism, like coverage of space travel, parenting advice, or business news. Then it floods their websites with dizzying torrents of AI-generated content — many thousands of articles per month, by our count — in a bid to soak up as many readers as possible via Google and other platforms.

There are signs that this strategy has been extraordinarily successful, with BBM boasting in 2025 that its network of sites had surpassed 50 million page views per month. It’s difficult to verify a site’s traffic without access to its internal data, but the analytics service Similarweb corroborates the claim that BBM is pulling in vast audiences, estimating that over the past year its network of publications has attracted an average of 64.7 million visitors per month. According to a recent ranking, that would make it one of the 30 most trafficked English-language media enterprises on the web, with a total digital readership substantially higher than that of NPR, narrowly besting CBS News and Forbes, and just slightly behind the Washington Post.

A media organization like NPR or WaPo, though, employs hundreds or even thousands of journalists to gather and report news. BBM, as far as we can tell, has cut itself down to a skeleton crew of about a dozen employees, including its three founding brothers. To operate such a sprawling empire with such a tiny staff, former insiders told us, BBM uses AI to crank out content at a scale so immense that it’s difficult to comprehend.

Along the way, BBM has indulged in breathtaking acts of dishonesty — often in ways that seem specifically devised to manipulate platforms owned by Google, where Ahrefs data suggests that it sources the preponderance of its traffic. (Last year, BBM wrote in a press release that its enormous audience was “driven by organic reach through Google Discover and search.”)

One of BBM’s many unscrupulous practices, insiders confirmed to us, is that it has often invented entire fake personas for nonexistent writers — we found more than 50 spread across its dozens of sites — and published content under their names without revealing to readers that they weren’t real people.

In many cases, BBM has even outfitted these fictional writers with impressive-sounding bogus credentials as it uses their bylines to churn out AI-generated material.
