Hasard du calendrier, le 11 septembre : jour funeste où la question revient sans cesse chez celles et ceux qui étaient assez âgé·es pour s'en souvenir (tu faisais quoi à ce moment-là ?). Pour ma part, j'avais 13 ans et je rentrais du collège. Rien que de très banal. Déjà un peu politisé, je ne peux pas dire que ma compréhension de l'événement fut entière. 

Mais l'horreur de l'épisode aura contribué à ce que je me forge des convictions par la suite : contre la guerre en Irak en 2003 tout d'abord, puis la dégringolade autoritaire qui, partout en Occident, succèdera à cet marqueur historique. Adulte maintenant, ma perception de l'espace public a changé : j'ai de l'appréhension à manifester (je le fais quand même), je suis abasourdi par ce que sont devenu les médias de masse (c'était déjà pas dingue). 

Aussi faut-il rappeler que tout regard actuel sur « le numérique » s'inscrit dans cette histoire pas si longue : des débats autour de Palantir jusqu'au « consensus sécuritaire et islamophobe » que Nicolas Sarkozy pose sur la table au mitan des années 2000, et les lois liberticides qui suivront. 

Nous sommes désormais à un point de bascule : certaines de ces technologies accélèrent les crises (politique, sociale, environnementale), et la perception même du progrès en est affectée – assez légitimement je crois. Les affects « technocritiques » montent : place des écrans, surveillance, peur de l'IA (électrisée par les prophètes du malheur). 

Ce livre se veut un point de départ délibérément engagé pour la période présidentielle qui vient et ses débats sur le numérique. Mais aussi une force de proposition, car le moment n'est pas juste à la complainte : un tiers du livre est consacré à l'ouverture de pistes politiques et institutionnelles pour un meilleur gouvernement des technologies.

Response from Doctorow to Hugging Face panic. Good if you're already familiar with circular financing & unit economics preconditions. But opening chapters of his book, especially "Really Weird Math" & "Funny Math Gets Dangerous" inoculate against all future strains of criti-hype.
This is a disaster all around: the AI companies are locked in a Red Queen's Race, a fatal beggar-thy-neighbor doom-loop. The only way they could escape that trap is by signing a nonaggression pact amongst themselves promising not to compete anymore. But there's two giant problems with this: first, it is incredibly, fantastically illegal under antitrust law, because it represents a conspiracy among the dominant players to cease to compete with one another, and; second, it leaves the field open for the further development of Chinese "open weight" models that customers can run on their own modest, low-powered computers, which are presently lagging the US "frontier models" by a mere four months:
