Love the part in Locke's ESSAY, Bk 2 where he says everyone always remembers their dreams. His argument is, "Dunno man, just seems weird that someone wouldn't remember their dreams." That's empiricism, babeeee!

I'm discovering a law I didn't know about? It required all white people who were new parents in 2008 to name their daughters Lily or Lillian?

(i think joe cruz's nyt piece, which acknowledges that "there will be challenges of scale", is perfectly fine. what's deeply annoying is the nyt printing 1000 of these pieces on teaching by Williams profs for every one piece on teaching by a CUNY prof)

Excellent paper alert! Marco Giovanelli's "Cassirer and the Arithmetization of Physics" really, REALLY (imho) advances our understanding of Cassirer's basic epistemological perspective. direct.mit.edu/posc/article...

It used to be that a young person could take 1-4 years to do something besides be as economically productive as possible -- and could do so without taking on crippling debt. School, music, sports, travel, whatever. Figure out what kind of adult they wanted to be. Giving that up was bad.

One member of my household is scared of the rain, and so had a sleepless night. She is exhausted.
An Australian cattle dog, lying curled up on a grey couch. She is resting one paw and her head on human arm, the hand of which is resting on her hip.

I was pretty busy yesterday, so I missed the OP. But I can't even imagine any possible reason why bringing an iced coffee to a job interview could be a red flag for an employer. Like, whatever that perspective is, it is presently inaccessible to me.

I've been scheming for years about curriculum changes that would make it possible for me to teach Kuhn on the regular. But my schemes are now stalled in limbo.

Garber is very right about this. It might be worth reflecting on the fact that, the more closely Kuhn engaged with analytic epistemology and philosophy of language, the worse his ideas got.

I'm reading Anne Conway this weekend for class, so here's my contribution to bsky's philosophy and AI debates: The computer has a soul. Why? Because everything has a soul, because only spirit is metaphysically fundamental and matter is nothing but the privation of spirit.

Noam is right about this. The narrative is one thing that helps hiring committees imagine your work extending over the next 5-6 years. They are very possibly wondering, "Is this person a good bet to get tenure?" The narrative helps them see an answer to that question.
