Mary Ruefle on The Odyssey.
Deconstruction
I think the sirens in the Odyssey sang the Odyssey, for there is nothing more seductive, more terrible, than the story of our own life, the one we do not want to hear and will do anything to listen to.

Preparing for my Memorial Day Weekend roadtrip by taking the snow shovel, rock salt, and kitty litter out of my car. So if we get a freak blizzard this week, it's my fault.

I’m a huge lover of the arts and worked as a theatre critic for nearly a decade, but I would not set foot in the Kennedy Center until this policy is overturned. Vote with your dollar and boycott. Mask up in solidarity with those who are now being told they can’t. Alt text in next post /5

Tonight I drove my white Prius to the home of a friend whose own white Prius was parked in her driveway, where we were joined by folks who arrived in a third white Prius. I'm glad my car was able to socialize with its friends this evening, too.

Tonight I had the joy of accompanying my 7-month-old godson to Baby's First Maundy Thursday Service. I even got to take him up to have his feet washed, which he LOVED! When we got back to the pew, his mom put his socks back on, and he spent the rest of the service pulling them off again

You'd think college administrators would realize that allowing ANY of your students to be disappeared is an excellent way to make your school undesirable to potential future students.

What is abundantly clear in many of the negative responses to Bishop Budde’s invitation to mercy is that many Christians either do not know Jesus or have simply rejected him. But there is a better way. Today is the day of salvation.

Do not call it a white elephant gift exchange unless you are doing WEIRD gifts. This is a hill I will die on. "A game where amusing & impractical gifts are exchanged. The goal of a white elephant gift exchange is to entertain party-goers rather than to give or acquire a genuinely valuable item."

If you consider yourself an ally to disabled and marginalized individuals - but you’re no longer masking in public - we need you to start right now. If a mask ban passes in NYC - it may not be long before we see them across the country. The best thing you can do for us is wear a mask.

These are hard times for many of us and likely to get harder, at least for the present, and I find the Advent theme of Christ’s coming as judge to put things right helpful. Trying to live the life of the Kingdom may feel like “fighting the long defeat,” but victory does not depend on us. So hope. ⚓️✝️

I was voter #899 at my precinct tonight. As I was leaving, they checked in voter #900, and everyone cheered. The poll worker who was scanning ballots said it had been the largest turnout he'd ever seen, and he told me to "take as many stickers as you want."

This might be the funniest example of clickbait I’ve ever seen 😂
The image is a screenshot of a news article headline from NJ Advance Media for NJ.com. The headline reads: "Did a Trump staffer push an Arlington Cemetery official? U.S. Army sets record straight." The article is dated August 29, 2024. Below the headline is a photo of former President Donald Trump, looking upwards with a serious expression. He is wearing a dark suit, white shirt, and red tie. The photo caption states that Trump is speaking at a campaign event in Las Vegas on August 23, 2024. The author of the article is Matt Arco. Below the photo, the article continues with a single word, "Yes."

The National Gallery in London is renovating its Sainsbury Wing and they’ve just found a secret letter from one of the original donors, sunk into a concrete column, saying that he hates the columns and is glad they’re being demolished. 10/10 unhinged rich man behaviour, no notes
A modernist concrete foyerTO THOSE WHO FIND THIS NOTE
IF YOU HAVE FOUND THIS NOTE YOU MUST BE ENGAGED IN DEMOLISHING ONE OF THE FALSE COLUMNS THAT HAVE BEEN PLACED IN THE FOYER OF THE SAINSBURY WING OF THE NATIONAL GALLERY.
I BELIEVE THAT THE FALSE COLUMNS ARE
A MISTAKE OF THE ARCHITECT AND THAT WE WOULD LIVE TO REGRET OUR ACCEPTING THIS DETAIL OF HIS DESIGN.
LET IT BE KNOWN THAT ONE OF THE DONORS OF THIS
BUILDING IS ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTED THAT YOUR GENERATION HAS DECIDED TO DISPENSE WITH THE UNNECESSARY COLUMNS.

A kind of relationship I would like to see more in fiction: two people who for very good reasons can’t be romantically involved, but who have a romantic emotional connection anyway, and they just manage it, without drama or hurt, and it makes them closer. Not will-they-won’t-they (they won’t).
