45 minutes later and the the Thin Red Line is as beautifully shot and as narratively weird as I remember from my last viewing 25+ years ago. This movie is all distracting actor cameos, voiceovers from the whitest men with southern accents monologuing like they are high af on mescaline, and Vibes.

bad image edit to erase most of the message to have Erik Grove only say "I am a very peculiar person"

I have done work and also other work and got my double covid flu vaccine shot and am celebrating by watching Terrence Malick’s Thin Red Line because I am a very peculiar person.

There are moments in this publishing journey where I am out there asking people I really like and respect for things and it is super awkward. It’s in these moments when I think that I could have just been a data analyst. I am trying so hard not to be weird, friends. I swear.

Deeper music nerd commentary: Dinosaur Jr.'s albums since Mascis and Barlow made amends and re-formed have been uniformly satisfying. Pure comfort food rock. It's wild to me that they have been "back" for longer than they were originally together. I'm a bigger fan now than when I was young.

For my fellow aging music listeners that still have a soft spot for Dinosaur Jr.: their new album continues to be Dinosaur Jr. as fuck. Catchy unstoppable rock n roll. There's something comforting about this band just giving me more of the same but less familiar. Love these old guys.

Me neither. That book I said I would finish writing “in September” is humming that fucking Green Day song and is, as yet, unfinished.

Writing/publishing friends - I know that some awesome reviewers only want print galleys. Can someone remind me who they are so I can sound like I have been paying attention when I talk to marketing and publicity people about my book?

I just want to say that I really disagree with that one thing we’re all talking about. Like you, I am also mad about the other one as well, but am supportive of the third and fourth thing. That fifth one though? Problematic as fuck. Like and repost. Thanks

i should clarify, when i write people doing bad things, it's because i am bad. they are me. more importantly, when you read about those bad things, they also become you. that's how story works. in fact, you are going to think about murder before this skeet ends. how's that feel, sicko.

Dammit. Not again, Thomas. We’ve talked about your infectious ideas before. You are only supposed to write people doing good things like sorting their recycling and making clothes for squirrels so they can hide their shame.

I am not especially concerned about AI detectors adding my work to their data sets because 1) supposedly they do not and 2) AI detectors are far down the list of bigger culprits. Seems like a scam and waste of money though so it makes those markets seem silly and questionably run to me.
010
Erik Grove @erikgrove.com · 29/09/2026
Right now, *I* wouldn’t use an AI detector for anything because I am skeptical of its utility. I don’t *like* the idea of markets putting my stuff in one and I would *prefer* they disclosed if they did. But editors can use all sorts of reasons to reject works and I don’t think we can control that.

Based on my small sample size of my agent and current/past editors/editorial teams a lot of people in publishing have names that start with J. So, if you want to work in publishing and your name doesn’t start with a J … I suppose you could change it real quick.

And, quite frankly, any writer org knowingly allowing someone to use their space to recruit people into a harassment campaign--or, say, allowing to operate a member who is a known threat to other members--shares responsibility for any ensuing harassment the target suffers.

Same thoughts/feelings. I don't want to discourage petty small group chats - they are absolutely essential for our sanity! - but there's a line crossed when you are soliciting people to join your petty group chats and those petty group chats become more about coordinated libel and harassment.

Look, I'm the first to tell writers to have small group chats where they can vent and be bitchy. It can save you from posting through it publicly when you just want to be petty and catty. You can't work in this industry without collecting a list of people you dislike for petty reasons.* BUT...
