Simon Morrison, the co-author of this insane glorification of Western classical music canon as the only proper subject for musicology, published a book on Stevie Nicks in 2022. Also, his affiliation is stated nowhere in the report PDF, nor does he appear on any other Vanderbilt report pages.

I know how long the song has been around—I read Amanda Petrusich’s piece on it in the New Yorker’s Songs of Summer series in August. She did analyze both the song & its impact. “Money-making=mind-opening” or “despised genre=song must be great” are not convincing arguments to me w/o specifics.

The RS article doesn't even attempt to explain why "Choosin' Texas" may be good--nothing about music or lyrics. It declares that it will "open your ... mind" simply because it's a commercial hit and a country song. And the shaming, peremptory tone! It's no longer poptimism, it's pop Scientology.

I get it. You hate AI. You think it destroys human capacities and the environment while also undermining critical aspects of humanities research and teaching. But if you care about your students and the future of the humanities, those objections are not sufficient. You need to engage with AI, understand both its appeal and its limitations, and integrate that awareness into your teaching.
