This is a perfect example how stupid identity politics really is. Brnabić's sexual identity DOESN'T make her follow politics that LGBTQ rights advocates do. Identity doesn't define anyone - non-white people can be racist, and lesbians can be authoritarian, etc. Her electorate doesn't care, as well.

China killed itself with pollution, insane population control, failed economic policies and totalitarianism. It's just as dead man walking as Russia. If US leaves Trumpists in power, they'll do the same to US. Europe is safe in the long run, just stay frosty and fight back. Always fight back.

Pretty much. We are now in a state of mind where reality and history starts over with every new tweet. Not to mention reading is hard, hurts our sensitive brains. So we are down to content creation and value signaling to whatever demographic we are after.

Nepal is just as desolate and impoverished as ever, hit by catastrophic floods, while Madagascar fell into deeper Russian orbit. Do the content creators care, since they cheered them on so much? Nah, they moved on to other stuff, and don't lose any sleep over it.

In their minds no harm done - to themselves. They got their clicks and engagement and revenue. Remember protests in Madagascar and Nepal? Huge news, everyone is following it, marketing departments rubbing their hands with profits. Nobody remembers those now, and they weren't successful protests. ⬇️

That always backfires. Not that it matters much now with Russia burning to cinders and losing in Ukraine, there's no one for Serbian nationalists to cling to. China is useless to them, because PRC doesn't give anything, they also just take, take, take. There's no future for both of these camps here.

Snyder's even worse - he simply KNOWINGLY regurgitated student propaganda how Serbia was ruined AFTER Milošević, which is no different than the Vučić's propaganda, but Snyder kinda framed students as some sort of anti-Putin movement that will lead Serbia out of Russian orbit.

Believe me, nobody wants the UK back in the EU more than me. However, readmitting a UK that hasn't moved on in its entitled attitudes from pre-2016 would be a potential disaster for the EU. Protecting the greater European project is far more important that having a half-hearted UK as a member.

I'm less sure about Burnham's intentions and still think he hopes to find a way through the EU issue that isn't politically painful. But his team have heard the message that such a path isn't there, narrowing the choice to status quo (now ruled out), drop red lines, or rejoin.

Thank you for the feedback and for the interest in the subject. The true nature of the student movement was reported in the European press, but it got as much attention as it deserves - Serbia isn't all that important. Serbian English-language press wasn't coy about it either. ⬇️

So the early critics of student anti-corruption demagogues and pro-Russian nationalists were told to shut up and "let the kids finish the job". And what job would that be, exactly? Apparently, turning Serbia into a 100% gubernia. It was a Chinese-built canopy that collapsed in Novi Sad. ⬇️

There is always this Greater Cause, you know, for which we have to lay down our blood and treasure. We have to "not give up on Kosovo" and "preserve the Republika Srpska" - those things are somehow always more important than having environmental protection or electricity. ⬇️

When the protests in Serbia started after the canopy collapse in Novi Sad in the autumn of 2024, to the locals and to the Western foreign ministries, it was obvious from the start that the students were a bunch of radicalized right-wingers. Those who started pointing it out were shushed up. ⬇️

He introduce PR now, he has the majority or he could always least start now with a consultation on systems to be considered with a concrete proposal well in time for any election, but he will not, and it will end up dropped in consultation with the usual vested interests.

I could not agree more. The UK should only be accepted once it demonstrates its committment to the shared European Ideal. The EU doesn't need us; we need them and until that is fully understood, readmittance would only be a prelude to Brexit II.

I agree that there is not much input needed from EU at this moment. It is reasonably clear what is acceptable to us, and it is very much up to UK to discuss internally what they want. We as EU are of course willing to say regularly some positive words, but that should be it.

The key is electoral reform. If Burnham can deliver that before the next UK GE in May 2029, then he has a chance of holding the Labour Party together. But if it is still FPTP, he’ll get screwed by a divided party.

But the really positive note? Cameron's rhetoric led him to this point, negotiating on terms of membership, and ultimately presiding over the quitting referendum. Burnham has opened this process. This will lead where it goes without his control, maybe even to membership Ends

Progress stalled on a limited reset, because of the new PM, and UK turning its back on European defence. Cooperation mainly based on us taking people the UK doesn't want in its country back to ours. Let's see if Burnham means what he says and anything material changes. 4

The conditions of membership are known. They are the EU treaties. Accession treaties can include temporary derogations but they don't include opt outs, nor do they change the EU treaties. You need to sell EU as it is, not as you want it to change (for UK only). This attitude will get UK vetoed.

But that's the very point Ali. There's not going to be; a) negotiation b) deal. There'll be; a) Application b) Referendum (provided UK meets the required Accession Criteria and is then subsequently invited to join). It'll never be a case of; "Hi, we're back, sorry about that Brexit thingy"...

Maybe I’m not good at politics and maybe Labour are truly pro Europeans and know a smart way to get back in. But his speech has 2 red flags 🚩 for me: the first one is that he called the EU a “market”; secondly he said he is seeking “consensus” in the U.K. with regards to the new relationship.
