Software developers make easy scapegoats because people don't know or understand what we do. The move, in some circles, to eliminate developers entirely stems directly from that ignorance. They don't understand what we do, so they imagine it's easy (and easily replaced by AI). 1/2

Adding features (and complexity) makes your program less appealing, not more. Software systems exist to solve a problem. Anything that's not laser-focused on the solution is an annoyance, and building that cruft is worse than money down a hole. It can lose us customers. 1/2

When some nice young presumably lesbian people at the zine fest asked me if I was comfortable answering why I, a presumably not lesbian person, made comics with lesbians in them, I showed them this page from Smooth Moves and I'm happy to say that it resulted in both laughter and sales.
A comic page: Marisol and Janice have a conversation about how most of the women they know are at least a bit gay, but the dudes are mostly straight. They wonder if it's that women are more sexually fluid than men, or if it's related to the growing influence of porn on mainstream media. They joke about how maybe whoever's in charage of the universe is just a boring straight dude who likes watching girls bang it out. The last panel is me drawing a comic, looking over my shoulder at the reader, saying "what."The cover of Smooth Moves, which features Tori and Val. Tori is carrying a box of stuff and Val is carrying a suitcase and wearing a gym bag. Also featured in little circles labeled "old boyfriends" and "ice cream" are Dr Manhattan and Janice

I miss the old days before AI, when - according to my LinkedIn feed - we didn't think about code semantics, only syntax, and wrote software without intent.

The problem with any sort of story-storage system, even a shoebox, is that stories age very quickly. Releasing something into the domain changes the domain, and we release into the domain constantly. The stories are based in the domain, so they change accordingly. 1/2

Give me a date, I can guarantee we'll hit that date. I just can't guarantee what we'll hit it with. Give me a spec, I can guarantee we'll deliver that. I just can't guarantee by when. Software development has its own Uncertainty Principle. To deny it is your golden ticket to disappointment.

Don't punish teams for making mistakes. We all do - especially when we're trying something new. Failure is part and parcel of innovating. But we *can* learn to fail at lower cost. And we *can* learn from our mistakes. Arguably, it's all we learn from.

If you can get the *results* of Test-Driven Development without doing Test-Driven Development, then it doesn't matter that you didn't do TDD. The fun starts when you try to get the results of TDD without doing TDD, and realise that TDD is actually the easiest way to get those results.

A good example of this is the wormhole sequence in Interstellar. Double Negative worked with Kip Thorne to use Einstein's field equations to produce a very detailed visualisation of a wormhole - instead of an artist's impression of one. Not more CGI. *Better* CGI.

How did you feel when DMX died? This comic is about how Val felt when DMX died, and is also about how Trent Reznor threw her out of his mansion for skinny dipping in his pool, is collected in TINA AND ELLIE TAKE THE CASE! Kickstarter here: www.kickstarter.com/projects/wan...
A page from Meeting Comics #20. Val is crying and Kevin, Thomas, and Janice enter.
Kevin: What's wrong?
Janice: Val just heard that DMX passed.
Val: Sob! Why did it have to be Earl? He was so sweet.
Thomas: Wait... did you know him?
Val: Yes...

Val: We lost touch... the last time I saw him I was a complete wreck, always partying, out of control... Trent Reznor had just thrown me out of his mansion for skinning dipping in the pool.
A panel of Trent and Val yelling at each other. Val has shorter hair and is naked and dripping wet.
Trent: Don't pull this shit again, Val!
Val: You used to be fun before you got sober!
Val: Earl was late to the party and found me on the porch banging on the door.
DMX walks up as Val, naked in clunky heels, is pounding on the door. There's a yard gnome in a NIN shirt.
Val: It's a five-inch nail at best!
DMX: WHAT!?
Val: He talked me through it, gave me some good advice...
DMX puts his Ruff Ryders jacket on Val.
DMX: "To live is to suffer. To survive? Well, that's to find meaning in the suffering."
Val: Sniff... would you drive me to Charlie Sheen's house?
Back to Val talking to Janice, Kevin, and Thomas. Her makeup is running and she's wiping her eyes.
Val: Oh god, I'm sorry... I'm making this all about me... you don't want to hear-
Everyone else: YES WE DO!
