Sweater / medallion combo
A drawing of Val from Meeting Comics in ink, marker, and colored pencil. She's wearing a cropped sweater and heels. She's also wearing a giant medallion. The chain goes under her sweater and the medallion in such a way that she is not illegally exposed... From the front anyway

this spooky season, did you know: I finished a new horror graphic novel this year? and you can read it all for free online?? It’s about finding out your mom has a secret old ex-girlfriend who is bald and wants to kill you. Sound relatable? Start here: www.thegoblinthrone.com/comic/001/

Tori and Val in PARK LARK
A short comic from Val and her Pals by Andrew Neal:

TORI & VAL in "PARK LARK"

Tori and Val are walking along a sidewalk. A lady older than them is also walking near them.
TORI: Gee whiz! I don't know why I'm so horny all the time!

LADY: Enjoy it while you can, girls! At my age, my sex DRIVE is more of a sex PARK!

A manager who looks out for the people they manage to the same extent that they look out for themselves is such a rarity. People with titles begin to believe those titles are more important than their behavior. It's pathetic how little power it takes to corrupt.

drawing from the back of a school catalog. The document was printed in 1881 and donated to a library in 1967, so the drawing is probably pre-1967, but it could have been defaced in the library...

Every AI generated event poster is incredibly ugly, but I do think it's interesting that that LLMs have essentially created a house style for flyers, especially one so maximalist and ugly and in contravention of of all convention and best practices established in graphic design over centuries.

Two years after Helene, we are still two cities The second anniversary of the storm sees a deeply divided city, between struggling communities still surviving the crises and an elite that's made the aftermath far, far worse. @davidforbes.bsky.social, with our latest: ashevilleblade.com?p=5399
A Blade graphic with the words "Two years after Helene, we are still two cities" over a photo of a flooded river.

In smaller text: Behind the marketing, Asheville remains deeply divided two years after Helene, marked by worsening inequality and a government that has made the aftermath far, far worse

Something I didn't think about until after everything was typed up and posted on my patreon and newsletter about this strip is that I had similar experiences with Hostess snacks and KISS. My first encounter with both of them was in comic book ads.

A comic page which is a parody of comic ads for Hostess Fruit Pies (and other Hostess snacks):

Val in SWEETENING THE DEAL

VAL (circa the Val Cannon mysteries, mid-to-late 90s) is walking on a sidewalk. A guy (Apparently JACK) is sitting on the steps of a house.
JACK: Hey Val!
VAL: Hey Jack

JACK: say... you wanna messa round?
VAL: Not if you still fuck like you did last week.

VAL (walking away): CAll me when you lear to eat pussy.
JACK: How about if I sweeten the deal...

JACK: ...with some Duchess® Cream Pies?

JACK: They've got flaky, tender crust and delicious filling!
VAL: Hmm

VAL is on a mattress with no sheet, with no pants on, looking a bit irritated. Her pants are there. We see JACK's butt as he is apparently passed out on his stomach. VAL is reaching for a Duchess® Cream Pie.
VAL: Well, he still doesn't know what he's doing...

VAL, about to bite into the pie: ...but let's try one of these things.

VAL, chewing a bite of the snack: ...it tastes like chemicals!

AD COPY at the bottom of the panel in a banner along with three Duchess® Cream Pie packages (cherry, banana, and berry): They taste like chemicals

i should clarify, when i write people doing bad things, it's because i am bad. they are me. more importantly, when you read about those bad things, they also become you. that's how story works. in fact, you are going to think about murder before this skeet ends. how's that feel, sicko.

When I see an AI ad and it's like "now I don't have to ever type an email all by myself anymore" I think of those infomercials where they invented a scenario to sell something to fix the problems of fictional slippery handed motherfuckers, but I guess some of those infomercials worked too, huh?

I heard a story on NPR in which the reporter said he asked everyone protesting data centers if they use AI, and almost everyone said yes. Having never used any chatbot that isn't forced on me via "customer service," I genuinely want to know what people do with it. www.npr.org/2026/09/26/n...
Screencap from the NPR story I linked to in this post:

NEUMAN: Is AI good for me? Right. But, you know, one interesting thing - I made a point of asking everybody I talked to - like, the most ardent - people who are the most ardent about opposition to data centers, do you personally use AI? I mean, of course, we all do when we're Googling or whatever. That comes up automatically. But make a point of, like, using a chatbot, like ChatGPT, for example.

ELLIOTT: And?

NEUMAN: Almost everybody said yes. And, you know, it was kind of a begrudging thing. It was kind of like, well, I use it sometimes, but I try not to use it too much. You know, there was a certain self-awareness that there was a little bit of hypocrisy there.

When some nice young presumably lesbian people at the zine fest asked me if I was comfortable answering why I, a presumably not lesbian person, made comics with lesbians in them, I showed them this page from Smooth Moves and I'm happy to say that it resulted in both laughter and sales.
A comic page: Marisol and Janice have a conversation about how most of the women they know are at least a bit gay, but the dudes are mostly straight. They wonder if it's that women are more sexually fluid than men, or if it's related to the growing influence of porn on mainstream media. They joke about how maybe whoever's in charage of the universe is just a boring straight dude who likes watching girls bang it out. The last panel is me drawing a comic, looking over my shoulder at the reader, saying "what."The cover of Smooth Moves, which features Tori and Val. Tori is carrying a box of stuff and Val is carrying a suitcase and wearing a gym bag. Also featured in little circles labeled "old boyfriends" and "ice cream" are Dr Manhattan and Janice

Wet meat
A diary comic called Wet Meat.
I'm talking to a vet tech. I say, "I feed the cats dry food in the morning and wet meat at night."

The vet tech says, "'Wet meat?'"

I say, "oh yeah, I guess that is a funny thing to call it. That's what my ex called it and it just became what I called it too..."

Then we see me walking along in four different outfits, starting with the one I was wearing in the conversation with the vet tech. In each panel I am thinking the words "wet meat."

The final panel is a close up of my face. I am still thinking the words "wet meat" and am shedding a tear.

File under "I'm paying them enough, so they better be," but every single person at this divorce law firm is remarkably friendly and cheerful. I'm sure it's training but maybe they just hire incredibly consistent personality types. Either way, it's notable.
