Barely an hour ago, Palestinian journalist Anas Al-Sharif warned us all: “If this madness doesn’t end, Gaza will be reduced to ruins, its people’s voices silenced, their faces erased — and history will remember you as silent witnesses to a genocide you chose not to stop.” Israel just killed him.

March 2026

Situated at the interface of corpus linguistics, discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, and surveillance studies, this book focuses on how surveillance is defined, discussed, and negotiated in public discourses. It analyses different meaning components of the cultural keyword of surveillance - inherently linked to power relations - in ongoing debates of public discourses.
The author looks at the representation of surveillance in different discourse domains through three different studies - the prime academic joural in surveillance studies (Surveillance & Society), The Times newspaper, and the signage of public spaces. The first two studies illustrate implementations of a novel method of 'co-occurrence comparisons' in diachronic analyses of collocation. The final study integrates cutting-edge research on the multimodal representation of surveillance in public spaces.
Adopting the sociolinguistic framework of 'surveillant landscapes' from mediated discourses analysis, this analysis reveals how surveillant practices are signalled in public environments. To capture the textual and material representation of surveillance in a collection of photographs from public spaces in multiple cities across Europe, North America, and Asia, the study presents a novel methodology combining corpus and qualitative methods for the analysis of multimodal data.

Viola Wiegand is Lecturer in Education (TESOL) at the University of Stirling, UK.

Man Brings Lunch From Home To Cut Down On Small Joys
RICHMOND, VA—Speaking with reporters while opening Ziploc baggies of pretzel twists and baby carrots, local man Stan Keppler said Monday that he has started bringing in lunch from home to cut down on his small joys. “Making your own lunch each day is a great way to reduce your simple pleasures throughout the week—it’s already made a huge difference for me,” the 38-year-old insurance underwriter said as he unwrapped a plain turkey sandwich from aluminum foil that he had woken up 15 minutes early this morning to prepare. “I used to go out for lunch with coworkers and actually enjoy myself every day, but now I just sit at my desk and eat something I packed from home. It’s quick, easy, and has cut my weekly sense of gratification by at least half.” Keppler went on to say that he is considering canceling his cable service as well, which would save him 90 hours of genuine relaxation time a month.

Every web page ordered restored by the court that features anything related to gender now contains this notice.
A screenshot of an FDA document titled "FDA-2024-D-4245" issued by the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, Center for Devices and Radiological Health, and Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. The document includes a highlighted section stating that, per a court order, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) must restore a website by February 11, 2025. It claims that any information on the page promoting gender ideology is inaccurate and asserts that there are only two sexes, male and female. It further states that the Trump Administration rejects gender ideology and criticizes its impact on children and women. Below this, the document provides guidance on increasing female enrollment in clinical trials, analyzing sex-specific data, and ensuring generalizability in medical product studies.

Does anyone have a Korean speaking friend who might be able to help me out with this query on the squirrels and grapes motif in Korean art? Question in image and alt text provided.
Does anyone have a Korean speaking friend who might be able to help me out with this query on the squirrels and grapes motif in Korean art?
I read in a museum definition that the Korean word for ‘squirrel’ sounds like ‘pine’, and the word for ‘grape’ sounds like ‘peach’ and both pine and peach are symbols of longevity so the squirrel and grapes motif stands for good health and a long life. Lovely, but I cannot verify this because this is the best translation of each word that I can find using the usual tools and they don't sound at all similar as far as I can tell.
Pine: 소나무 (sonamu)
Squirrel: 다람쥐 (daramjwi)
Grape: 포도 (podo)
Peach: 복숭아 (boksunga)
Is the translation wrong or is the museum description wrong? Or are they both correct in a way that I can't understand?!An example of the squirrels and grapes motif from the Met Museum https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/40447
