🗣️ It's the last FACTOR talk of the academic year! Join us for Dr. Tharindu Ranasinghe's discussion of the challenges of offensive language detection in political discourse, including how human and machine moderators often disagree on what's considered offensive.
Brutalist, graphic-novel-style illustration, muted, earthy color palette, deep ochre, slate blue, charcoal. A chaotic social media debate on fragmented speech bubbles, some censored, others highlighted in red. A mechanical moderator, cold and rigid, clashes with a human moderator, expressive and conflicted, both struggling to define 'offensive'. background hints at political discourse, silhouettes of clashing ideologies

two panel meme. on the left a cheerful white cat is quoted thus: saying "have a nice day" to someone sounds friendly. on the right, the same cat looks faintly quizzical and is quoted thus: saying "enjoy your next 24 hours" sounds threatening.

god i'd forgotten how much i love this chart. if you've never seen it before, it's illustrating how many murders have been committed both before and after Florida enacted its "Stand Your Ground" law the question i like to ask my students: "is the chart deceptive?"

LAEL students, want to put your forensic linguistics and crime-solving skills to the test this Halloween? Then this is for you. On 30th Oct, LAEL Society are running a Murder Mystery Night. Have LAEL staff been out criming? Am I the killer?? Or is it... someone else...?
This is a poster for the LAEL Society Murder Mystery Night, featuring a wug holding a bloody knife. It says, "Solve the crime using forensic techniques! Prizes for winners! 7pm, 30th October, Bowland North SR06. £2 tickets, scan the QR code." On the right hand side of the image is a QR code and beneath this it reads, "£1 Tickets for LAEL Soc members".

Much as I'm deeply cynical about the lifespan and reach of all these new platforms, here we go again. It took something pretty significant to make me get up the effort though. And that thing is: In the coming weeks, we may have some interesting news... 😏
This is a picture of an empty police office where a murder is being investigated. There are letters, maps, pictures, and spectrograms pinned to the wall. There are case files, a microphone, and a typewriter on the desk. It's in black and white, neo-noir crime style. Because it was generated by AI, bits of it make absolutely no sense (e.g. why is there a clock pinned to the noticeboard? Why is there a modern microphone overlooking an old typrewriter? Why does the spectrogram look more like a seismic event readout or a cardiac graph?), but if you don't stare too hard, it looks nicely convincing, so we'll pretend it's okay.
