A new round of DARG date sessions starts today: 40th year running. In the old days we used to cram into a rather shabby teaching room; but it had chairs and a table, and gave us the space away from admin and teaching. An hour poring over tapes and transcripts amongst like-minded folk - marvellous.
an image taken from Loughborough University website describing the DARG data sessions. It reads, in part, "the discourse and rhetoric group has been running data sessions every Wednesday from 13:00 - 14:00 during university time since 1987. Since the pandemic, all sessions are also online…"

One of the great things about having a British Academy conference is anefficient and useful subtitle facility, done in real time. Not, in fact, AI, but a humantranscriber working at speed. The speaker’s words appear as a running strip beneath the slide.Unusual but very helpful.

"Positive news"? Not good that one in five recent graduates regrets having gone to university. Probably those who had to endure overcrowded, under-resourced courses taught by overworked staff with no time for real teaching. www.theguardian.com/education/20...
Clip from a Guardian newspaper story about graduate satisfaction.:
Matt Heili Rayner, an analyst who compile the Guardians University guide, says the new data supplied by the higher education statistics agency was positive news. "Very few students say they would do something different than go to university – only about 20% of graduates say they would do something completely different"

Have you used conversation analytic insights to train or engage with professionals in healthcare, industry, education, safety, crisis response, etc? Why not share your experiences about?
An image with a blurb for the panel. The text is the following: How can conversation analytic research insights shape how people interact in the real world?

This panel develops interactional awareness as a CA recasting of “situational awareness” — a familiar notion in crisis and other safety-critical settings, but one that typically leaves out the fine grain of interaction. Where situational awareness is a cognitive state within the individual, interactional awareness foregrounds the moment-by-moment organisation of talk and conduct through which it is displayed and made accountable. We invite contributions that examine how CA findings are translated into actionable insights, training, engagement, and societal impact across healthcare, industry, education, safety, and crisis response. Topics include:

What is interactional awareness (IA) from a CA perspective?
How does IA respecify situational awareness?
How can CA concepts and findings be communicated beyond academia?
How are CA-based interventions, training models, and resources developed?
How can the impact of CA-informed knowledge mobilization be demonstrated and evaluated?

Join us in discussing how CA can make a difference where interaction matters most. Submit your abstract here: https://pragmatics.international/page/CfP2027

Part of a ROLSI.net guess blog on making a game to instruct students in CA phenomenon. The clip reads:
"First we prepared the set of cards. One set of made up of abstract of an academic paper that a certain phenomenon; the other set was made of matching short clips from a movie or TV show which feature the salient (we hoped) instance of those phenomenon. The cars were mixed up and placed face down on the floor.
What a card with the number was uncovered we played the corresponding clip to the players; if it was an abstract, the players read it and discussed it. Then the card was placed face down again and as the game went on and the players had got an idea of where the cards were, they had to pay them up."

Just heard a presenter (not a guest) on a Radio 4 programme use the term "social construct" in a meaningful way; first time I think that I've come across it broadcast. If so then it's taken 60 years since Berger & Luckman. Much slower uptake than e.g. Festinger's "cognitive dissonance".
