this is the pattern: A pledge dies. Someone is hurt. Women are raped. Maybe there's a civil lawsuit, maybe criminal action, maybe a frat is banned for a while, maybe that chapter goes defunct. A task force accomplishes nothing. A new crop of students arrives. The system remains, as it is intended to

Oct 14th - #Hackers of the world united to overload the Gibson, and prevent the Da Vinci virus from capsizing an oil fleet, designed to distract from "The Plague's" worm stealing $25m. 📽️📅 Hackers (1995)
3 Screenshots from the movie "Hackers" (1995): First, a group of young people is gathered in a subway car, with one reading a paper as another looks on, while a subtitle reads, "Wait a minute. The 14th... that's the same day the worm ends its run." Second, a person with a striking hairstyle and colorful clothing stands in front of a vibrant, patterned backdrop, saying, "Hackers of the world, unite." Third, a person leans out of a car window, passionately shouting, "Hack the planet!"

My heart breaks for mathematicians whose lives and careers are being destroyed by AI — and especially this PhD student, who doesn’t even know he is a poet
Kai Shaikh, a Ph.D. student in mathematics at the University of Toronto, also currently at SLMath, observed that theorems are easy to use as benchmarks, but that they capture little of the wonderment at the heart of math. "Just like a photograph of a mile marker can't provide much of the value of actually going on a hike," he said,
"it would seem to me that proofs without stories, or even stories without struggle or mystery, and first glimpses of strange beasts, are not very meaningful or valuable to us humans."

Yes yes, global warming, data centers, AI economy, those are all big problems but none of them are as daunting as getting my perfectionist second grader to do math Seriously let me save the world. Just someone else get this kid to do her homework.

We're continuing to report on sports betting apps, and we need your help. ProPublica is looking for at least 250 people who use DraftKings and FanDuel to share their data with us and help us understand how the apps respond to user behavior. ➡️ How to help: projects.propublica.org/sports-betti...
A neon green tracker shows that ProPublica has received 28 people's sports betting data, just over 10% of the way towards its goal of 250. Text below reads: If you’re one of millions of Americans who have placed an online bet on a sporting event, you know how quickly you can go from celebrating your wins to feeling like the odds are stacked against you.

ProPublica is trying to understand how sports betting apps incentivize users to keep playing and when they warn users to pump the brakes. To do that, we need your help: We’re aiming for at least 250 people to upload their gambling history from apps like FanDuel and DraftKings. We’re not quite there yet, so if you’ve used these apps, you can help our journalists. If you’ve worked in the industry, you can also help us by answering a few questions. (You can also reach us on Signal.)

A few people have suggested I try to productize it but I don’t think it’s possible. It’s too custom. Trying to make it generic would lose the magic. But I do think that people would pay like, $1 a day to get some very targeted custom help (because I am.) That’s not sexy startup math though.

I think a lot about labor and household labor — mostly because I hate doing it. I have an AI agent that I’m getting a lot of value out of, but it’s extremely extremely customized to my life. And it’s doing mostly “last mile” tasks — the labor of keeping these tasks automatable I am still carrying.

One buyout firm quietly collected Pyrex, Corelle, Instant Pot, and Oneida. Farberware is a name on a 200-year lease. And the pans still worth buying.

I think many of us saw a few months back the Worse On Purpose about the All Clad pans whose layers separate and can slice your fingers open In you ever wanted to know what this looks like, it’s happening to the small saucepan I use almost daily (left) and not to my larger saucepan (right)
Two All Clad saucepans, the one on the left is experiencing the layers separation issue described by Worse on Purpose. The one on the right, which I use less frequently, is fine.

The gap between the layers is wide enough that I can run my fingernail through it
