rainy sunday on bedford avenue. the sukkah setup on the sidewalk means that NYPD made a temporary sidewalk in the bike lane ... so the "bike lane" is now in the median.... being blocked by the traffic cops. this can't be the situation for the next week+ @mayor.nyc.gov

This awful story is another reminder that helmets and high-viz will never be enough to fill the massive safety gaps left by insufficient infrastructure. A traffic calming device before the crosswalk likely would have prevented this death by forcing Knapp to stop, or at the very least, slow down.
Police used video footage from nearby buildings to calculate that Knapp had about 150 feet to stop from the time that Skalka first activated the pedestrian lights, according to the affidavit from detective corporal Padric Hartnett.

But Knapp, who police estimate was driving a few miles per hour over Pine Street’s 25 mph speed limit, does not appear to have hit the brakes until just before hitting Skalka, the charging documents say.

“An attentive, prudent and careful operator would have yielded,” Hartnett wrote.

Knapp told responding officers that he did not remember seeing the flashing lights. He said it seemed Skalka was in front of him all of a sudden. He denied having consumed alcohol.

"It’s not about e-bikes, and you know what, Zohran, it’s not about wearing a helmet. I wear my helmet every day. It doesn’t matter if I’m hit by a truck. If you’re a child that’s hit at 30 miles an hour, you will die."

Notably, Mayor Mamdani was soccer teammates with Kelly's son at Bronx Science. Kelly gave the mayor a photo of the two then-boys at a presser on McGuinness Blvd. in January. "I did not know then, what I know now, which is that Asher’s father was killed while riding a bicycle by a reckless driver."
In a touching moment, the mayor showed off a picture, handed to him by Mary Beth Kelly, of himself with her son years ago. Mamdani said he was not aware that his friend’s father had been killed by a driver.

The fixation on helmets often obscures the larger conversation about safe infrastructure, and the way I like to explain to people is this: The helmet protects you from yourself, but it won't protect you from anything larger than yourself. If you break it down that way, folks seem to understand.

A box truck pulled into the unprotected Bedford Avenue bike lane on my ride to work this morning. That's how I got into my crash on Bedford and Lafayette in 2021, but that time, the driver sped along before stopping short. That block is protected now. This one... not so much.

The Bedford Avenue bike lane continues to be a totally unnecessary policy quagmire — it’s safer for residents and commuters alike, but people with cars who want to double park insist the “community” doesn’t want it.
