My hopes have never been so quickly raised and dashed as just now, when I learned there was a ramen place opening near MPOW but there is no vegetarian ramen on the menu

We're at least four or five generations post-apocalypse in the book; I don't think much mass-produced knitwear will survive that long.

I wouldn't be mad about being scheduled for an 11:00 class and 12-2 desk shift except that the salad and sandwich vending machine is out of salad and sandwiches

"Why does she have a machine-knitted sweater on the cover of the book in the deindustrialized postapocalypse?" (I didn't notice that she also had a smoky eye, but a friend pointed out that part).

Alice, if you want a cute, gothic, romantic white dress with all three skirt tiers made out of lace, you gotta give me a better commission.
Dressmaker game still. The dress has a wool laced bodice, lace bishop sleeves, and two tiers of skirt in white lace and the last tier in white cotton.

The coop had chickpea tofu and pumpkin tofu but not silken tofu! I already bought all the other ingredients for my laksa recipe so I'm going to need to somehow find time to go to the Asian grocery store.

Made a dress for a vampire to go to a gallery opening. It had to have a lot of sequins.
Still from the game Dressmaker. There is a dress with a dark green silk bustier top, a dark red silk underskirt, and a black sequin overskirt.

Heartbreaking: I finished the book but am skipping book club on account of feeling a bit ill. Hopefully not Actually Sick, because if I'm Actually Sick I'm very much in trouble with Tuesday's dentistry PubMed class.

If you ask me for an eclectic patterned picnic dress, I will make one heck of an eclectic patterned picnic dress!
Dressmaker still. The dress is a teal pattern, with a long skirt and butterfly sleeves, a dark red band around the bodice, and a luna moth on the bodice.

This is a dress for feeding the birds. For some reason I can't find the dress I made for the vampire.
Still from the game Dressmaker. A velvet waistcoat, purple embroidered cotton undershirt, and long green and white argyle skirt.

Farm dress which I do think is cute, although I had to use 3 colors but didn't want to buy more fabric, so ended up with that slightly ostentatious collar.
Still from the game Dressmaker. The dress has a light blue bodice, an apron front/skirt in a yellow scandinavian floral pattern, and a purple embroidered collar and sleeve cuffs.

Very excited to read several of these books, especially The Works of Vermin (which I have heard so many good things about but been a little squeamish to read)

My gym is closing 😨 Man, I was so psyched that I had finally found a gym with a better range of equipment than Planet Fitness, air conditioning, reasonable commute, reasonable monthly costs, and there are not a lot around here.

Guys, what are we doing. We're still submitting AI-generated graphics to peer-reviewed journals without PROOFREADING THE TEXT?
An AI-generated graphic (presumably) that describes the relationship between obesity and obstructive sleep apnea. "Inflammation," "dysfunction," "apnea," "dysregulation," "leptin," "fatigue," "daytime," "collapse," "obstructive," and "fragmentation" are all misspelled.

I'm just about at the point where I don't have to worry so much about money, which is good, because at the beginning you get a lot of moments where you're trying to stretch those scraps as far as you possibly can rather than being able to buy cute new fabric.

Making a librarian a warm, professional dress for working the front desk that DEFINITELY CANNOT BE cute or romantic is too real. Because of the cold in the building and also the sexual harassment. (Love this brown houndstooth!)
A still from the game Dressmaker. It shows a brown houndstooth coat-dress in progress.

On a personal level, I feel honored that I've met Carson. On a different personal level, I'm glad that the Nobel is celebrating someone shy, peculiar, intense. May all the weird/funny/creative/dark/introverted people of the world live long and prosper.

Look, my book's been OOP for long enough that I don't have a dog in this fight, but people don't realize how hard midlist queer authors have been hit by book bans. It's not To Kill A Mockingbird, it's not 1984, it's a book you've never heard of by somebody whose book earnings are sub-minimum-wage.

Yes, I'm playing the dressmaker game. I don't know if it's hideous.
A picture from a computer game of a dress. The bodice is dark purple embroidered cotton. The skirt is a long bias skirt, trailing on the floor, in harvest-yellow linen.

Is this the first Nobel Prize for Literature that has gone to somebody every Tumblr user can quote from memory? (Okay, is "I'll take care of you" - "It's rotten work" - "Not to me. Not if it's you" more Tumblr-famous than Bob Dylan? I don't know, but it's gotta be close, right?)

This autumn is so gorgeous that any time not spent outside breathing in the air seems like a crime. This is the time of year when my cat always insists on going outside; maybe she agrees with me.

To put this in perspective chestnut trees used to be dominant species in the United States. Billions of trees were killed by fungal blight and now fully grown America chestnuts are functionally extinct. There is no getting them back. Ever. All for a data center. www.gadgetreview.com/one-of-ameri...

"The gear problems are only on the indoor trainer, so I would have to put the bike AND the trainer in my car and take them down to the repair shop" - NO, Emily, you are competent at basic bicycle repairs once you've found the right Park Tool video.

I entirely understand why I didn't bother to fix my gear shifting on my indoor bike trainer last year when it was giving me such problems. (I had spent hours in fruitless troubleshooting, including saddle-pain troubleshooting). But it really just needed three minutes and a tiny screwdriver 😭

Don't think I'd ever write this because I generally don't want to write the kind of thing that makes people think "I know what IP you're trying not to riff on too obviously," but "two people fall in love while on a reality TV social deduction game" would be a killer romance premise.

Bc I sort of think a big part of the problem is that the place where you go to talk with your friends is ALSO the place where you get flooded with messages about who you should be and what you should buy, and sometimes it's hard to tell who is your friend and who's just trying to sell you something!

I kind of think that we won't come to terms with the effect of the internet on mental health until we can talk about the whole spectrum from "people talking with their friends" to "influencers talking to their customers"

Better than any of those alternatives but still dodgy: "Please put the Video Music Awards out of their misery." (This should not be read as nitpicking; this is genuinely "Huh, I wonder what's going on with my own grammar intuitions here" rather than "you should have written it differently.")

Emily Horner @emilyhorner.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Love it when a sentence makes me befuddled about my own linguistic intuitions. Sounds bad to me: "Please put the VMAs out of its misery." Sounds nearly as bad: "Please put the VMAs out of their misery." Definitely worse: "Please put the VMAs out of their miseries."

Here’s the most incredible story you’ll read today. A small plane with four people aboard crashes in a field. Another pilot witnesses it. That pilot happens to be flying a bunch of skydivers. They offer to jump to assist, are given permission. The skydivers happen to be EMTs. Everyone survives.

Google's AI search tool helpfully tells me that this is a "famous quote attributed to Mark Twain" without telling me that it's misattributed to him. Not that I'm ever shocked by an LLM doing something badly, but to know it's that susceptible to widely debunked misinformation is...yikes.

(I mean. I don't know for sure everything that he said or didn't say. The quote-verification web sites seem not to be able to find an actual citation, and besides, it REALLY doesn't seem like the sort of thing that he would say; I don't think 'abundance' was much used that way before the 70s.)

Emily Horner @emilyhorner.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I once read the quote "If you want love and abundance in your life, give it away" on an herbal tea box, attributed to Mark Twain. I've read a lot of quotes attributed to Mark Twain, and he said some of them, but he definitely didn't say that one.

I can in fact afford to go hiking and much of my money anxiety (not all!) is a bit silly and I should not worry TOO much for the saving of my alienated being. But I sure do need to get that basement window leak fixed before winter.

Thinking "I'll be under my gas budget for September if I don't fill my tank, but then I can't go hiking..." reminds me of that Marx quote where he says that the more you refrain from eating, drinking, buying books, etc, the greater the saving of your alienated being.
