With a few hours still stretching ahead before the evening’s big event, they decided on a late brunch adventure in the heart of the Gayborhood, a place that always hummed with vibrant life and welcoming energy.

They wandered side by side into a cozy little cat café tucked between rainbow painted storefronts, the air rich with the scent of freshly brewed coffee, sweet pastries, and the faint musk of curious feline wanderers weaving between tables. Plush cushions and soft jazz created a sanctuary from the city’s bustle, and the pair settled into a sun dappled nook, their spirits lifting as a parade of cats curled lazily around them.

Lunaris shoveled down a warm, crumbly gluten free blueberry muffin with a delighted grin, savoring each bite like a small victory, while Rae indulged in the café’s signature lavender mimosas, her laughter bubbling with mischief and warmth. Hours stretched, tender and unhurried, a perfect pause before the whirlwind of the night to come.

“Well, I have to call you something, if you keep showing up here.” Lunaris said with a soft, amused breath.

He moved closer, boots gliding soundlessly just above the stardust path.

“You greet me like someone who knows the shape of this realm,” he said. “So tell me, what should I call you? Not your name. Not yet. Something that suits the way you swing from starlight like it belongs to you.”

His gaze held theirs with the same quiet intensity he’d carried in the forest.

“I’ll call you Warden, until I learn what lies beneath.”

Lunaris wrinkled their nose, the hint of a smirk pulling at their lips. “Warden, hm? I prefer Architect, if we’re flinging titles across the void.”

Hello #Sniptober pals! I swapped today’s word as well! Compel swapped for force. Caden is desperate to ruin the surprise for Lunaris and Vex elbows him silent.

Vex chuckled. Behind the mask, something shifted, a crease of amusement, a glint of recognition. “Fate works faster than we give it credit for,” he murmured.

Caden whispered under his breath, “Especially when they’re stoned on a hotel smoke deck watching the sunrise.”

A swift elbow jab.

Lunaris blinked. “What?”

“Nothing,” Vex said smoothly. “Just appreciating timing.”

Lunaris dropped their gaze. A flicker of pink rushed their cheeks. Fingers brushed the hem of their shirt, searching for grounding.

They felt it, the invisible ripple in the air, the sideways glance between two masked men. Something had been said over them, something missed.

Of course you missed something, they thought bitterly, too busy mooning over someone’s eyes like a fool.

They forced a small smile, polite and practiced, the one they wore when the world moved faster than they could translate. A breath in. Careful exhale. Nodded. Fine. I’m fine.

#QueerWritersChat Heres one of my yearniest moments from TTL. I wish I could post the scene from Permafrost Heart where he sees them for the first time ever irl.. but PH is closed until I get it back from the editor. (To keep me from picking at it)

A ripple shimmered in the far dark, a distortion in the fabric of the sky. From that subtle pulse, he appeared, stepping quietly onto the celestial trail. His presence felt both unexpected and inevitable, like a shadow finally choosing to step into the light.

He met Lunaris’s eyes without a single word, something like yearning and resolve flickering in their depths. Even the dreamscape seemed to hold its breath.

“Well, well,” Lunaris murmured, voice a velvet thread of starlight. “Hello, Walker. Slipped back into my sanctuary, have you? Seems to be a once in, always in sort of threshold for you. Tell me, was the crossing gentler this time? Fewer teeth in the dark?”

The light of a falling star cast gold across his onyx mask. A slow, cautious smile tugged at his mouth below it, like it wasn’t used to existing there.

“So I’m Walker now?” he asked, tasting the name. “Fitting, I suppose. I have wandered far to find this place again.”
