Lerion reached into his coat, pulling out a length of thin rope that he kept coiled in an inner pocket. Because normal people carry emergency rope, he thought bitterly. He looped it around his waist, securing one end to the branch and tying the other to his belt. It wasn’t perfect—honestly, it probably wasn’t even safe—but at least if he rolled in his sleep he’d only dangle awkwardly above the ground instead of face-planting into it. Small wins.
He leaned back against the trunk and closed his eyes, allowing himself a moment to simply breathe, to let the tension in his body ease as much as it could. The forest was a living thing and he could feel it around him: the rustling leaves, the nocturnal creatures moving in the shadows, the steady rhythm of life that persisted in the darkness. Lerion adjusted his position one last time, ensuring the rope was as secure as it could be, then pulled his coat tighter around him.
He wouldn’t sleep deeply—he never did—but it would be enough. The tightness in his chest and the strange unease could be dealt with later. For now he would let go, if only for a few turns, and let the forest watch over him.

Toodnis: a sallow green-skinned man with black hair holds a dead flower in a haunted forest

Toodnis let her lifeless form crumple to the ground. He licked the blood from his blade before tucking it back into its hidden sheath. The power he drew from her swirled within him, a tangible force that thrummed through his veins, invigorating him and sharpening his senses. He straightened, a pleasant satisfaction settling over him.
He didn’t need this ant’s energy, of course. He possessed a nearly endless reservoir of power, a wellspring of dark magic that had been cultivated and refined over many sleepless nights. His mastery of the vexmornic arts was unparalleled, his connection to the forces of death and decay stronger now than it had ever been.
But oh, it would grow stronger. It must grow stronger. Things were lining up and he had no time to waste. Why waste his own resources when so much life surrounded him, ripe for the taking? The world was full of people like her, desperate weary souls who clung to their existence with fragile hope. They were all too willing to give up what little they had left when faced with the inevitability of their end and, in return, Toodnis could continue to preserve his strength, his power growing ever more potent with each life he claimed.
He didn’t need to justify it. He never felt the need to. This was the world as it was: ruthless, indifferent, cold. Power belonged to those willing to seize it, and Toodnis had long ago decided that he would never be anything less than the master of his own fate.
Just a little more, he thought, visualizing the few Shards he had yet to claim. With those final pieces in place, he would be unstoppable. Even the ‘One’—that hidden little thorn—wouldn’t be able to escape him. Soon, the pitiful protections that stood around the fool would crumble, like everything else that dared to stand in his way.
