Third Way's narrative seems to be that Republicans have gotten more extreme while trans advocates have moderated. I don't agree that trans people were too extreme or that we've moderated besides being sidelined in the debate over our own lives, but if that's how they want to save face, okay.

For a good 30+ years of my life I had no concept of what "trans" was. I just knew I wasn't into guys yet somehow desperately wished I was feminine, and that made no sense in the "queer" spectrum I was aware of up to that point. I had no words to describe my feelings. Nobody to talk to, either.

For what it's worth this is literally the thing that Nathan Cofnas' research project at Ghent University was about. I didn't know much about him in particular at the time I said this or two years earlier in my panel talk at The World Transformed '23. It's just long been a huge right wing anxiety.
