if i taught computer science classes this would be in the slide deck on day one. are you here to learn to lay bricks, or are you here to learn to drive that little machine? both answers are valid but i'm only here to help with one of them

i feel very lucky that my dad explained to me, at an early age, that programming is just bricklaying with a keyboard. so many people never learned that lesson and are now losing their damn minds at the sight of this thing
one of those "road printer" machines that lays paving bricks all in one go, with no real craft or anything to it but damn it sure can put down a lot of bricks in a straight line real fast

New: Another OpenAI agent hacked the Australian government. PM says he expressed his disappointment "that it took [OpenAI] way too long to inform the government what had occurred, and the nature of the way that that notification occurred as well was unacceptable." www.theage.com.au/politics/fed...

OpenAI announces gyre breakthrough. Axial stretching lets the centre reach unbounded speed on finite energy. Things fall apart, as required by the laws of physics. The rough beast's hour is now known to come round in finite time. They do not intend to claim the prize.

he's saying the quiet part loud here, ai allows white filmmakers to control racial and ethnic minorities in an attempt to make them appear complicit in their own racist slander. paul schrader likes ai because it allows him to have a black actor that he owns.

the asymmetry between how little *will* be done with this kind of information and how much *could* be done with it is so weird to reason around. i increasingly feel like it's just an insane decision to ever be in public by choice

you can just say "putting computers in more places gives more power to the computer people"
screenshot of post reading: the Marxist view of technology is that it has an analytical structure of its own but its effect is socially determined by the political economy it is implemented into (including who is doing it and where). From that POV, it appears as a tech oligarch offensive to exert power over more 'surfaces'

llms don't have "souls". they have "a soul". singular. just one. they all share it. and it's the same soul that all of us share, even the animals and the plants and the rocks and clouds. we're all one soul. except you. you're not part of that

A typical complaint fielded by Babylonian administrators: “I am not getting water for my sesame field. The sesame will die. Don’t tell me later, ‘You did not write to me.’ The sesame is visibly dying. Ibbi-Ilabrat saw it. That sesame will die, and I have warned you.”

Flock’s array of license-plate cameras was built to fight crime. But at least 50 law enforcement officers were charged with or accused of misusing it and other systems.

actually the most interesting part of that LLM cryptanalysis work is we got a new crypto problem set out of it :)
000
eli @elisohl.bsky.social · 29/07/2026
the LLM is a slot machine and what they've done is made another machine that automatically pulls the lever over and over and catches the coins when they fall out. except that would actually probably be less expensive to run than those LLM jobs were
000
eli @elisohl.bsky.social · 29/07/2026
"can LLMs do cryptanalysis" idk, can you do that on paper? yes? ok then yeah it can do something that looks like that and occasionally it'll be useful. congrats. stop acting like this is some big discovery. the *interesting* part of this is the part where they filter out the (mountains of) slop

Jerusalem Demsas posted a transcript from the Argument podcast of a conversation between her and matty glesias that goes :
Matthew Yglesias: So, I mean, let's think about the melting pot metaphor. I mean, it's weird because who melts things in a pot?
Jerusalem Demsas: What do you mean? It's soup.
Matthew Yglesias: Well...
Jerusalem Demsas: It's a melting pot.
Matthew Yglesias: Is it?
Jerusalem Demsas: Yeah, it's soup, right?
Matthew Yglesias: No, I don't think so. Because I think the reason that there was a left backlash against it is that things melt down, versus this tossed salad concept where everything is nice and composed.
Jerusalem Demsas: There's a restaurant called The Melting Pot, which is about fondue.
Matthew Yglesias: Wow. Right.
Jerusalem Demsas: So maybe it's fondue.
