1. #MedievalSky, grab a lifejacket and a seasickness bag, we’re casting off on a thread about the Norman invasion fleet in 1066! 960 years ago, the Normans landed at Pevensey and established a base at the Roman shore fort which was already succumbing to erosion from the sea on its south side. 1/20

The NEC Breakfast Computer PROFESSOR TOAST HYPER 7 was a unique morning-oriented computer designed to sit on a user's nightstand and provide a quick portal into email, local news, and hot fresh toast all in the one unit.
A picture of an NEC Breakfast Computer PROFESSOR TOAST HYPER7, with a small keyboard in front, greyscale LCD in the front showing flying toasters screensaver, twin floppy drives, and a couple of slices of perfectly made toast popping up out the top.

I'm 45! But spiritually, on some level, a lot of Bsky people seem to be about 38.

One of the takeaways from Hbomb's vaccine vid that sticks in my mind was just HOW BAD that paper was. Shockingly crap. (That analysis may also be in Brian Deer's book, but to my shame I have not read it.)

The “best” thing about genAI (the quotes are doing heavy work here) is that it’s really lowered the bar on getting into hand-made art. Literally anything you make is better than ai. There’s never been a better time to throw away your fear and start learning that craft you’ve always wanted to learn.

"What they don’t understand is that social constructs the way we parse reality" - this is the bit which I think means Dean's reaction is unfortunately not silly. And the problem is, even if the doc handles this point competently (😬), headlines like this do a lot of damage on their own. Oh well!

As someone who had to get a private ADHD diagnosis in my 40s after my GP messed up, I'd fully agree with that. Just wish I could believe that [waves hands at everything] In The Current Situation it would be done in good faith.

Eliot Beer @eliotbeer.co.uk · 03/08/2026
Mmm. If I thought the documentary makers knew what a social construct actually is, I'd have more faith this was just "silly".

I hope - really really hope - I am being overly pessimistic. I would LOVE for the Tories to pass into history as a fart of a party without any negative consequences. But because of all the above, I would prefer if there wasn't a significant chance the next gov't didn't try to burn everything down.

Any government could repeal any law (or laws) they want with a single bill, if they have the will to force it through. NHS, benefits, education, whatever remnants of regulation are left - they could all go. And who knows what new laws could get through...

So there could easily be another explosion in the UK. Maybe it can't be avoided. Maybe on some level it's needed. But whatever happens, I'd like to see the amount of damage to people's lives minimised.
100
Eliot Beer @eliotbeer.co.uk · 01/08/2026
We've had several explosions in the UK in the last decade, which in hindsight seem minor compared to the pos-Jan-2025 cataclysm in the US. That cataclysm has caused hundreds of thousands - millions? - of deaths worldwide. And deaths, poverty, misery for vast numbers in the US.

Eliot Beer @eliotbeer.co.uk · 01/08/2026
Again: not arguing HRC or Kamala or Starmer or Burnham are good. They are not. And the decades of corruption and arrogance and contempt was always going to cause an explosion at some point.
100
Eliot Beer @eliotbeer.co.uk · 01/08/2026
Lately I'm coming down on the latter side, because what's happening in the US is BAD - and has put the lie to "he's just as bad as HRC/Kamala" (arguably). And thanks to the UK's system of parliamentary sovereignty, any motivated gov't with a working majority has basically unlimited power.

Eliot Beer @eliotbeer.co.uk · 01/08/2026
I keep going back and forth on "Labour are already pushing policies that are more extreme than Reform, so why should we care if Reform get in?" vs "Farage has been paying attention to DJT's second term, and could do uncalculable damage to the UK"

Eliot Beer @eliotbeer.co.uk · 01/08/2026
(I'm kind of thinking out loud here, so (not that you need permission) go ahead and ignore me! I'm rambling! All this stuff keeps going round in my head, so I find it useful to try and articulate some of it. But I don't have any firm conclusions, except: shit's fucked, and: aaaaaaAAAAAAAA.)
100
Eliot Beer @eliotbeer.co.uk · 01/08/2026
NB: This is NOT me being one of those "oh but we need to support Ser Keith to keep Reform out!" types. Labour are fucking awful. But right now all the less-awful parties don't look like they can win on a national scale. They need time to change that - maybe longer than until the next election.

The current count of parties which tick both a) and b) is... Um. Hm.
100
Eliot Beer @eliotbeer.co.uk · 01/08/2026
That's fair. I care about who might win a future election, and would prefer it not to be a party of batshit ultras. So in the context of our deeply broken electoral system I would really prefer a selection of parties that a) are electable and b) won't spend 5 years causing massive damage.

(Not saying I agree with SKB on things. I follow him, and other people who would probably describe themselves as 'centre-right', because I find it interesting to see their thinking. At least until they say something truly unhinged/vile - somehow that happens quite often... 🤔)

Eliot Beer @eliotbeer.co.uk · 01/08/2026
It is terrifying about seeing the previously-hugely-dominant (nominally) centre-right party go from "winning a stonking majority" to "finishing behind two far-right parties in a huge by-election" in less than 7 years.

If you get mad at stuff like this then it’s REALLY important you read the first chapter of The Psychopath Test by Jon Ronson. Broadmoor is hell, and anyone who “manipulates the system” to get sent there isn’t getting out, and is almost certainly in the right place.

Or maybe this is a case of "sometimes shit just happens, and there isn't a satisfying reason". It's annoying, but I genuinely think this is the reason for a LOT of stuff starting. Even if what happens next is more deliberate.

Maybe Zahawi is right (!), and It Was Decided that Farage was more a liability than an asset, and this whole thing *has* been engineered to some degree. I don't think it's very likely, but it's definitely not impossible - at least to some extent.
