You could argue that homelessness and crime are bigger structural issues beyond what a mayor could control. But we're talking basic city services! This is a mandate for someone (anyone?) to dramatically change the way we plan, build, and maintain our city. And address a lot of other issues as well!

It's kind of amazing how the driverless taxi debate can turn the city council's biggest hater of public transit (Pearll Warren) into someone who says of people without driver's licenses: "they still have to get around and go to places... it's choice, it's autonomy..."

US isn’t taking climate change seriously when it comes to transport policy Other countries are demonstrating that they can (1) mode shift toward transit, walk, bike; (2) electrify; (3) densify. US failing on all fronts. Result is that US emissions from transport aren’t falling as they should

Minneapolis is one of the most liberal places in the U.S., home to a specific brand of inclusive and effective progressivism. Minnesota is the birthplace of charter schools and anti-labor corporatists have convinced many Mpls liberals/progressives that public schools are bad. Both things are true!

There's a *social* hierarchy that places "person who does computer in office" much much higher than "person who gets food out of the ground." This social hierarchy makes it hard to imagine that AI can replace the first and easy to imagine that it can replace the second. That's probably backwards.

data centers are a real-world locus of contest of control on climate emissions and the future of work, between usually unaccountable financial capital and regular people, occurring in the land use domain where there are built-in levers of power. it is fully rational and not remotely a panic

Mayor saw a $60 million transit investment and decided it would be better if the bus lane was parking most of the day, which makes it real hard to clear out for the few hours it's allowed to be a real bus lane.

Waymo, Zoox and Tesla are clamoring to bring autonomous ride-hailing to cities like New York and Boston. But it’s small towns and rural areas that could see the biggest upside from AVs.

Transit has always been the best way to get to the Minnesota State Fair! From 1891 to 1952 a complex streetcar network ran in and out of the fairgrounds bringing thousands of visitors every day. You can still see the historic arch that trolleys would pass under.
