I do love a bit of Muriel Spark and The Bachelors was no exception. Everyone in this slight little novel has the piss mercilessly taken out of them. Every sentence is hilarious. If you're new to Muriel, it could be a great place to start. #booksky #justfinished
The front cover of The Bachelors by Muriel Spark in a vintage Penguin Classics edition. The top quarter is bright orange and the rest of the cover features a black line drawing of a circle of people appearing to be in some kind of dispute on a white background.Text from The Bachelors by Muriel Spark:

'He doesn't need a job,' Walter said. 'He's got his private income and his basement. And he's an Anglo-Catholic. Anglo-Catholics always get jobs.'

'He hasn't got much income,' Chloe said. 'Have you seen the way he lives? That basement is going down and down. No one to look after him.'

'He ought to have got married,' Matthew said.

'He's not the marrying type,' said Chloe.

'He pees in the sink,' said Walter, 'not that I hold that against him.'

I’ve never read anything quite like The Trees by Percival Everett. Absolutely batshit, completely subverted my expectations. And I loved it. #booksky #justfinished

I truly, deeply, sincerely do think the guy flipping burgers at McDonalds should be able to afford rent, bills, and groceries with his paycheck alone. That's kind of the whole point of having a job and I can't believe this is considered a radical position.🤷🏽‍♀️

The Core of the Sun, Johanna Sinisalo, tr. Lola Rogers. In 🇫🇮, only pretty, submissive women can reproduce; the intelligent are sterilised. Vanna, secretly intelligent, needs money to help her sister, so gets involved in trafficking a stimulant: chillis. Scary. #WomenInTranslationMonth 💙📚 #xl8 🌐

The background is black, the title appears just above the centre in yellow, with a bright red chilli overlaying it.
