All right we're in business, the honduran mahogany finally came in the mail. I patched a few small holes and epoxied the whole floor to stabilize the cracks. This will get a layer of glass and epoxy yet but was still a surface finish to focus on

Not a ton of progress this last week but I'm nearly done with sanding the floor and have glued a few things discretely. Once I'm done sanding I can stabilize all the cracks and loose wood with epoxy. I can't put the new fiberglass layer on until I patch the wood sides and screw on the new keel.

Next is stabilizing all the wood. I can epoxy the cracks in the floor now but patching will have to wait on the veneer I ordered online getting here, as we're years past easy local access to Honduran mahogany. (We shouldn't really ever have had it, but that is a separate conversation)

Fiberglass floor is gone, safe for a few stubborn patches that fight on. Now chipping the slots clean and removing the brass screws holding the keel on. I'm hoping I can refinish and keep using the keel (the bent ends are cooked, but removable and separate so that's fine) but we'll see

On we go, separating the old fiberglass from the wood when I'm lucky/good involves running a palette knife between the two to shatter the brittle old resin. If the fiberglass is weaker it leaves a patch that's annoying, but it mostly isn't

The floor of the canoe with the top layer of fiberglass fabric roughly a third gone, a third separated but still attached, and a third still down. A palette knife, pair of gloves, and sanding block are on the floor of the canoe

Started with ripping the old gunwales off. They were punky enough that I was getting rid of them regardless, but whoever "overhauled" this in 1981 ringnailed the inwale and outwale together from the outside, bad moisture practice and also a fastener requiring destruction for disassembly

The canoe side-on with it's outwale cut into strips between the nails and with each piece rotated from horizontal to vertical awaiting its removal via a good pry

Here's why I built the mold. This is one of two cylinder arched backs for the octave mandolins I'm building braced up. (The wood is cherry with some nice curl in the figure)

A thin sheet of cherry, in the arc of the mdf mold, with five spruce horizontal braces roughly evenly spaced along it's length. The end braces are kinda rough; the middle three are shaped into a peak along their length. The middle three also have masking tape on either side of the brace.

The same mdf sheet now matches the paper form curve pretty well, though the mdf curve has ruts from the plane blade rather than being smooth

I'm using my scrub plane on mdf and it's weird, like the imitation wood I suppose in some sense it is. (I'm hollowing out a 27" cylinder form for the back of the octave mandolins I'm building)
