After years in academia, I’ve learned how much meaningful support matters. Supervisors should support their trainees when it matters most. If they choose not to be involved—which is their prerogative—they shouldn’t later claim credit for or take pride in their trainees’ success. What do you think?

The Brain's Blood Vessels May Hold a Key to Alzheimer's—and Protection From It
Columbia scientists have mapped how a protein called fibronectin stops the brain from talking to its blood vessels in Alzheimer's, and laid the groundwork for drugs that could prevent the disease.

Academic growth is best understood not as a linear or exponential curve, but as a process of dispersal—spreading ideas, people, and collaborations outward into new domains. #notetoself it’s dispersal, should be dispersal.

How does a brain with #Alzheimer look in the microscope? Neurons are dying, and I literally see holes in the tissue, like below. You can see microglia (🟡), brain immune cells, accumulating where the tissue disappears (hippocampus & entorhinal cortex). Additional markers: Astrocyte(🟣), pTau(🔵). 🧠🔬

Scientists at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute set out to sequence the #zebrafish genome in 2001, completing it in 2013. This revealed zfish have more than 26k protein-coding genes (more than humans) and that around 70% of human genes have at least one similar gene in zfish. #ZebrafishFunFacts 🧪
a. Orthologue genes shared between the zebrafish, human, mouse and chicken genomes, using orthology relationships from Ensembl Compara 63. Genes shared across species are considered in terms of copies at the time of the split. For example, a gene that exists in one copy in zebrafish but has been duplicated in the human lineage will be counted as only one shared gene in the overlap. Taken from Howe et al. 2013
