For years, sector employers, represented represented by the Universities & Colleges Employers Association (UCEA), had already laid the ground for such an escalation: during national negotiations, they repeatedly claimed that casualisation, workload and equality could not be resolved at the institutional level. As the financial crisis deepened, senior managers and UCEA itself went further, arguing that the underlying funding model was unlikely to change and that redundancies were therefore unavoidable. In other words, these issues could not be resolved by institutions themselves, with meaningful progress instead ultimately requiring state intervention.

Coursera and Udemy, two major online learning companies, have finalized their merger, first announced in December. Leaders say combining forces will save the companies $115 million in operating costs over the next two years and allow them to invest in and scale AI innovations. Coursera’s and Udemy’s platforms combined are a juggernaut that includes about 290 million learners, 95,000 instructors and hundreds of industry and university partners.

But increases in young people going into HE was spread across Major, Blair/ Brown and Cameron. The drop in graduate premium is greater in the UK than other oecd countries - some with greater rates of massification suggesting a failure of the economy not an effect of massification
