This is so, so well-articulated.
People call this friction "grunt work." Schwartz uses exactly that phrase, and he's right that LLMs can remove it. What he doesn't say, because he already has decades of hard-won intuition and doesn't need the grunt work anymore, is that for someone who doesn't yet have that intuition, the grunt work is the work. The boring parts and the important parts are tangled together in a way that you can't separate in advance. You don't know which afternoon of debugging was the one that taught you something fundamental about your data until three years later, when you're working on a completely different problem and the insight surfaces. Serendipity doesn't come from efficiency. It comes from spending time in the space where the problem lives, getting your hands dirty, making mistakes that nobody asked you to make and learning things nobody assigned you to learn.

very easy and not even really untrue to say "not even Fortnite can make live service work now", but like. Most generational hits don't then try to brute force a new Steam and try suing the entire tech industry. People are losing their jobs in service of insane vanity projects.

There's some variation in reviews, but most big sites have it hovering at around 8/10 with a couple percentage points either way. That's enough to crash a AAA studio's stock price these days despite it being a huge seller. This kind of nonsense isn't sustainable. Or coherent. It's just weird vibes

With his head in his hands, the young man says “what do I do glyptodon?” Panel 3: the glyptodon says “I’m like an early ancestor of armadillos. True Art
(Beartato and Reginald, in a museum, gaze upon the Mona Lisa)

BEARTATO: There it is. The Mona Lisa. The most famous painting in history.
REGINALD: Wow! What's it do?

BEARTATO: It... what?
REGINALD: Why's it famous? What's it do?

(Beartato thinks.)

BEARTATO: I don't know.

REGINALD (to nearly museum employee): Excuse me! Sir? What's it do?

EMPLOYEE: You're the first person to ask! Watch this!

(The employee yanks a pull-string. Mona Lisa's eyes spin around and her mouth opens like a puppet)
MONA LISA: Honk honk! Honk honk!

(Everyone is delighted. This is true art.)

the most underrated bad thing about our current era culturally i don't really see other people talking about is that a lot niche communities treat insularity and conformity to their own very specific set of values as an extreme virtue and are deeply suspicious/unfamiliar with anything outside that.
