It's important to recognise is that this *isn't* about the US getting "back" to business with Russia, because there's never been much US-Russia business of any kind beyond arms control. What the Trump admin is pushing for is an unprecedented alignment of the US with Russia.

Fun story about one of the first dogfights between the Zero and Hellcat. The attack on 10/5/1943 was the biggest carrier raid of the war so far, 3 fleet carriers and 3 light carriers. Flight ops were a mess so planes began heading to the island captured by the Japanese in December 1941 on their own🧵

from 2001. no one’s doing product testimonials like this anymore. t.co/PEswCtbEZz
Toyota's unease at being associated with the Taliban and Al Qaeda is evident. In its September statement, the company said,
'Toyota does not have a sales or distribution channel in Afghanistan, and we do not export vehicles to that country."
Somewhat less laconic was Wade Hoyt, Toyota's spokesman in New York, who put the best corporate spin on the situation this week.
"It is not our proudest product placement," he said. "But it shows that the Taliban are looking for the same qualities as any truck buyer: durability and reliability."

More world leaders have to get comfortable with saying that last sentence in response to Trump statements. They need to get over their poltiteness and fear, and be willing to say "we didn't agree to this".

As with the Trump admin, they think they are the only beings with agency in this world, and political effects only ripple away from them, never towards. I'm desperately hoping a Dem trifecta in 2029 shows them that there are consequences to open political hackery and corruption in the top court.

I wonder if these hearings have always been this ridiculous? I genuinely don't know. But it seems crazy that for sequential sessions of congress, one party has been making increasingly insane claims and outright lying in hearings to a degree that should be embarassing and disqualifying for office

I wonder what it would be like to write the same column, over and over again, endlessly. Seems like it’d be boring. But maybe it brings one comfort, like having your parents read you the same story every night before you go to bed.

One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.

I don't know why it's not a giant story that Meta is able to pull $80 billion out of the economy, and blow it all on Metaverse. I get that that this is a company not a government, but operating at this scale is government-ish, and that's a huge amount of resources to burn on stupid ideas.

It's all Gender! People with service and laptop jobs are treated as unmanly and unworthy of consideration even though they are the ones driving growth and filling the treasury. But when a blue collar male worker from a subsidized industry like oil or coal losses a job - that's a national tragedy.

SCOTUS consistently allows Trump to do real immediate harm today, on the premise that restricting him might impose some completely hypothetical harm on the office generally in the future. Just completely backwards and devoid of ratilonaltiy.

They don't believe they are in over their heads. It's super-charged Dunning-Kruger effect with alcoholism and a bias to aggression on top. To the extent they see themselves fail at all, they attribute that to someone else. And one of the things Trump doesn't tolerate is accepting responsibility.

You can redirect that energy to a proximate issue that is real. I don't think that voters are suddenly stupider. Stupid is likely constant with time. I think the issue is that political leaders don't actually lead anything anymore. They just ambulance chase.

I wonder how this changes (if at all) if the GOP get their asses handed to them in the mid-terms. Do all these media companies continue to double-down on kissing up to Trump even as he tanks the GOP and his popularity goes to 20%? Where is the bottom for the NY Times, CBS, Washington Post, etc?

Semantics matter, and not being able to accurately name the problem hurts the ability to solve it But when people say "I feel poor" they don't mean in absolute numbers. They mean relative to what they see online Similar for thinking things are expensive because of COVID inflation and $3000 iPhones

I feel like this whole debate is semantics. An average voter just picks from options presented to them to communicate their frustration. We're seeing that wealth and income inequalitry has skyrocketed in the last 40 yrs, and become massively visible in the last 10-20 yrs with social media.
