the sea advances insensibly in silence, nothing seems to happen, nothing moves, the water is so far off you hardly hear it.. yet it finally surrounds the resistant substance.

It depresses me that I was born at a time such that LLMs will probably be better than me at my own research field within the next 5 years. I care so much about the mathematical community - about mathematicians - and I don't want to see it all fall apart.

I love proofs in (elementary) Riemannian geometry where the proof is just by unpacking. I feel like if you just write the correct expression then so often the proof is just by unpacking + expressing in local coordinates.

feel so depressed. end of quarter and I just don't feel like I care anymore about anything, math, my life, etc. I feel so estranged from myself, I've spent so much time doing math problems for random classes (and I still don't feel I understood the material well) rather than having thoughts

Narratively having Ever Given getting stuck in 2021 to set up Hormuz in 2026 is great foreshadowing. You want your audience to understand the basics of international shipping in a lower stakes context so you drop the real plot without a lot of saggy exposition about the minutiae of cargo logistics.

I’m sorry but I still can’t get over the fact that the analyst Jean Leray was captured by Nazis in 1940 and knew it was time to become Goblin Wizardman & this is why the world contains sheaves
1 Prewar work
Leray's first published work, in 1931, was in fluid dynamics; he proved the basic existence and uniqueness results for the Navier-Stokes equations. Roger Temam (74] has expressed the view that no further significant rigorous work on Navier-Stokes equations was done until that of E. Hopf in 1951.he became the Director ("recteur"). His major mathematical interests had been so far in analysis, on a variety of problems which, though theoretical, had their origins in, and potential applications to, technical problems in mechanics or fluid dynamics. Algebraic topology had been only a minor interest, geared to applications to analysis. Leray feared that if his competence as a "mechanic" ("mécanicien," his word) were known to the German authorities in the camp, he might be compelled to work for the German war machine, so he converted his minor interest to his major one, in fact to his essentially unique one, presented himself as a pure mathematician, and devoted himself mainly to algebraic topology."

The most unsubtle, heavy-handed claims made by pomo academic types have turned out to all be true. Gender is a relation of domination that requires constant, affirming witness. Capitalism will require extractive colonial relations. There’s no subtlety. Every day is like a 101 seminar at Oberlin.

Tom Stoppard, playwright of dazzling wit and playful erudition, dies aged 88
A theatrical sensation since the 1960s, whose dramas included Arcadia, The Real Thing and Leopoldstadt, Stoppard also had huge success as a screenwriter The playwright Tom Stoppard, whose playful erudition dazzled the theatregoing world for decades, has died aged 88. One of a select band of writers from any discipline to earn his own adjective – “Stoppardian” – in the Oxford English Dictionary, he delighted in the most improbable juxtapositions: philosophy and gymnastics in Jumpers (1972); early 19th-century landscape gardening and chaos theory in Arcadia (1993); rock music, dissident Czech academics and the love poetry of Sappho in Rock ’n’ Roll (2006). Wikipedia article called "Cabal (set theory)". The main text reads, The Cabal was, or perhaps is, a set of set theorists in Southern California, particularly at UCLA and Caltech, but also at UC Irvine. Organization and procedures range from informal to nonexistent, so it is difficult to say whether it still exists or exactly who has been a member, but it has included such notable figures as Donald A. Martin, Yiannis N. Moschovakis, John R. Steel, and Alexander S. Kechris. Others who have published in the proceedings of the Cabal seminar include Robert M. Solovay, W. Hugh Woodin, Matthew Foreman, and Steve Jackson.

The work of the group is characterized by free use of large cardinal axioms, and research into the descriptive set theoretic behavior of sets of reals if such assumptions hold.

Some of the philosophical views of the Cabal seminar were described in Maddy 1988a and Maddy 1988b.

Okay this is embarrasing but I as a semi-mature probabilist only recently realized that the event {S_n = 0 infinitely often} is not in the tail sigma algebra (where S_n denotes a simple random walk, idk S_n = X_1 + ... + X_n for X_i iid centred e.g.). It is still in the exchangeable algebra though!
