Like CATS? Like SPACE? Like MECHS? Like SHOOTING STUFF. Like QUESTIONS ABOUT THE ETHICS OF CONSENT IN UPLIFTING ANIMALS AND ALSO THE HEALING OF TRAUMA THROUGH KINDNESS Then, my friend, put the 6TH OF OCTOBER in your diary. Audio and EBOOK release of BEASTS OF THE WILD BLACK. (Tell everyone.)
A cat is looking out of a human space suit at you. That's what we call in the trade, a visual metaphor. Now comes the blurb.

Years ago, Deep Strike cadet Min Law was left behind during what was meant to be a routine operation. Though he survived, the resulting trauma almost ended his career. Now, as captain of the DST Thunberg, he is preparing to take his crew on a similar journey to a seemingly quiet world following a garbled distress signal. The mission is simple on paper: find the source of the call, offer aid, return home.

But nothing is simple in the Wild Black at the edges of the unexplored universe. As the crew of the Thunberg searches for the signal’s source, they find strange ships and corpses that shouldn’t be there. The mysteries begin to pile up. What happened out here? And why does some of the technology look horribly familiar?

Fortunately, Min’s team of animal counterparts is prepared for anything. The bear, Sitka Pete, is eight hundred pounds of loyal muscle. The rooks are quick and coordinated, perfect for reconnaissance. And the cats, Oz and Hinder, well, they’re just cats. But together they’re more than up for whatever the Wild Black can throw at them—even if this region isn’t quite so unexplored after all . . .

Looking forward to #Fantasycon in Glasgow. Here's my schedule and come and say hi, Around, Friday 5-6pm reading from “Terror“, Malin Saturday LAUNCH 9.00am (!!!), Orkney Wizards Tower Press Wiz-4 (“the story of my heart”) 11.00 am Death to AI Panel (Panel Room 2) Sunday am, Around #books #SFF
ALT
The Crooked Medium’s Guide to Terror
A striking book cover with the title and author name dominating.
The lettering and detail are pale against a dark and sinister red-brown. The Title is in large Victorian lettering emphasising the word Terror by size of font and red added to letters – not dripping blood! - and framed by gold. Three roundels show icons related to the book; left, a half folded cutthroat razor streaked with red, top right, pearl jewellery with three pearls and a pearl effect locket; bottom right a burning railwayman’s lamp.
The effect is striking and Victorian.

The cover of Wiz-4 a novella anthology from Wizards Tower Press
The book shows the two novellas by dividing the cover into two triangles the line being top left to bottom right corners.
Left is Top Tips for Loving a Lizard. It shows a jolly green Godzilla holding a smaller ginger King Kong, with a big red heart. There’s a definite more than best friends vibe.
Right is Marooned off Ceres which shows a red moon, a space turtle and a female astronaut who is black. It’s not framed to feel like a threat.

I have not DMed the author of this lovely review of The Shape of Monsters to find out what gave them the ick because LMTY I KNOW ALREADY 😂 Hands up if you also know (no spoilers)
An absorbing exploration of the many complicated ties and facets of sibling relationships, the psychology of always letting the monsters in (mentally and in this magical place physically) and marriage as possession

One very specific element of this story gave me the ick!!! Which was a real shame because otherwise I loved this book… truth is if I hadn’t been so engrossed in the deeper elements of this story I might’ve had to dnf but I kept reading and overall it was a fascinating tale of smouldering magic, siblings and fate ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (could’ve been a five if not for …dm if you need to know).

Wondering if I should do a rerun on my "Outlining Stories While ADHD" workshop I did for Worldcon. I added a lot of other writing while ADHD strategies, too, like this one slide...
A presentation slide with the text "Executive dysfunction hits! Oh no! What now?" with a melting smily emoji. Next to it is a picture of a person slumped over their bent knees, on a bed covered with papers and a book.

New story out today! A woman is haunted by a hermit crab who takes up residence in her dead husband's bones, gradually moving up his skeleton...out now, with @electricliterature.com !! 🦀🌊💀 Free to read here: electricliterature.com/the-bone-her...
The Bone Hermit
It’s very inconvenient that the hermit crab has taken up residence in your bones. At first it was disconcerting, to see him skittering along the beach, parading your salt-bleached toes outside our cottage. Sometimes he stops, right at the edge of the garden, and folds himself up into the crook of your remains, staring straight at the gate, watching me.

I thought I’d done a better job at hiding your body. I thought the sand and sea would wash your bones clean and sweep them away. But the sea, it seems, is resourceful. And now this tricksy little creature has come back to haunt me. Maybe he is you, reincarnated, and this is your final joke. You always did tell me you’d get the last laugh. My dead husband still wants the last word - The Bone Hermit flash fiction by Lyndsey Croal
