feels like at least part of what is happening is that a lot of people want politics to solve the "my life feels empty" problem and the populist right is directly appealing to them

I resigned from ExxonMobil today. I spent the last three years doing fossil fuel extraction research at both BP and ExxonMobil. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing to maximize extraction while the window to act closes, and gambling with our lives. More below.

Do fascists support representative systems of government? No, they're relentlessly authoritarian. They aren't taking liberal ideas to the extreme, they're rejecting all of them, in their totality. They'd be the first to tell you - these days they openly call themselves 'post-liberals.'

Which is not to say we're powerless. Indeed, the opposite: the entire reason we perceive this impulse as 'fascism' rather than just 'normal politics' is that we have succeeded in building a world that is *better* than fascism. That is not natural, it is a creation of our effort!

Fascism is not new, in a sense, it is old: fascism is the emergence of our old, pre-liberal, pre-enlightenment emotional gestures, bubbling through the cracks of modern society: suspicion of outsiders, the desire for uniformity, for a strong leader, for conquest of the out-group.

The excesses of the Woke 1 era mostly amount to cringe public statements, harmless vocabulary updates and loss of prestige for public figures. The backlash to Woke 1, on the other hand, is imprisoning dissidents, dismantling public education and eroding democracy. That's what needs reckoning

Personally, I think what needs reckoning with is how fake it all was. Centrists convinced themselves annoying leftists on twitter were an equivalent threat to Jan 6 insurrectionists. They wildly inflated the threat of left-wing authoritarianism while ignoring how it was taking hold on the right.

It's also INCREDIBLY DUMB. Often the key to swing-state success is the sense that a politician isn't bound to one party, that they think for themselves, that they're willing to express disapproval of both sides. By maintaining a broadly left-of-center coalition, you give them space to do that.

One thing a lot of ppl don't realize is that most of the free world has liquidated the material basis for a creative slacker class, and this is a large part of why mass media has become so sterile. Your art has to pay your godawful rent from Day 1 and you can't take risks with the rent money.

That basic problem -- the problem of the information environment, which I've banged on about for 20+ years now -- is upstream of *everything* else. There's no simple fix. It's certainly not going to be fixed with clever word choice or policy proposals. You have to shift the deep mythologies.

Wrote about the stolen valor behind the racist backlash to Nolan’s adaptation of the Odyssey. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
But of course neither Kelly nor Miller “built this country,” and they have as much to do with, say, the writing of The Odyssey or the painting of the Sistine Chapel as I do—the fact that Kelly and Miller are white does not make these accomplishments theirs. People who espouse these views do not value the classics for what they can teach us about the ancient world or our own, but as bleached marble monuments to their own superiority.

There is nothing wrong with taking pride in one’s ancestors (although Miller’s were actually poor persecuted Jews from Eastern Europe, not ancient Roman senators). Honoring and celebrating the past achievements of those ancestors, however, is different from taking credit for them. All Kelly and Miller did was win the lottery of being born in the richest country ever, one whose institutions and traditions they are busy helping destroy with as much zeal as the Greeks in Nolan’s film defiled the temple of Athena.
