Minor issue on the whole, but I like his valuing of life based on whether it is "economically productive," measured by contribution to GDP. Measured directly, Paul Erdős's "economic productivity" was basically negative as he crashed on people's couches doing meth. But his true value is enormous.

lot of people talking about new coalitions of middle powers. but i think the argument is pretty compelling that in our age,of that's the way you want to go? you've got to get a sovereign nuclear deterrent. that'll be expensive. but it will be worth it.

I visited LA once and between the two intersecting avenues abutting the hotel I stayed at and the diagonal highway running kitty corner underneath the intersection, there were 14 lanes and the traffic was still ass on all of them.

Frankly as a classical liberal I don’t think any of this should be part of normal political discourse, but if they’re demanding it, fine: Even though it shouldn’t matter, right-wing US Evangelicalism is an unlettered perversion that ineptly projects bigotry into scripture where it doesn’t exist.

We need at some point to talk about American Evangelicalism as a heretical movement. We should not indulge the delusion of a bunch or nuts who cherry-pick the Bible to rationalize otherwise indefensible 21st century bigotries that they are representatives of a global faith.

They even blocked Gulfstream Aerospace from doing business in Canada — Completely unjust and unfair! That Era is OVER! Which is a long way of saying that the structure of social media, the single feed instead of private communities, encourages the twin poisons of clinging and aversion, because it lacks both the shape and the norms the physical world has to help us keep those in control.

In a recent essay, I argued that social media turns toxic because it lacks the architecture of a city. A single feed has no walls, no acoustic distance, no doors you can close. Running with the idea now a bit more, a big problem is that this breaks our internal psychology.

White supremacy isn’t “serious” news. Serious news involves lawyers and money and policy. The government working hard to convey that the country is for the white majority, and the other 45% of the population are biologically inferior and best seen as invaders, is lightweight fluff.
