Look. The argument is very simple, I'll explain. 1. Consciousness is mysterious; neuroscientists don't quite understand how it works 2. LLMs are mysterious; LLM vendors don't quite understand how they work 3. Therefore, LLMs are consciousness. In logic we call this an "extremely correct syllogism"

I really did not expect any balanced position on 40 from that billionaire's paper. Kudos to the editors and to the author Michael Hiltzik.

once again reminded how the designer of the furby sincerely believes they are alive radiolab.org/podcast/more...

CALEB CHUNG: Well, I have to ask you, when is something alive? Furby can remember these events, they affect what he does going forward, and it changes his personality over time. He has all the attributes of fear or of happiness, and those are things that add up and change and change his behavior and how he interacts with the world. So how is that different than us?

JAD: Wait a second, though. Are you really gonna go all the way there?

CALEB CHUNG: Absolutely.

JAD: This is a toy with servo motors and things that move its eyelids and a hundred words.

CALEB CHUNG: So you're saying that life is a level of complexity. If something is alive, it's just more complex.

JAD: I think I'm saying that life is driven by the need to be alive, and by these base primal animal feelings like pain and suffering.

CALEB CHUNG: I can code that. I can code that.

The thing about the Goomba Fallacy is that it operates at all scales, and it has an inverse that works just as well as the main thing ("all these people have the same bad consistent opinion"). It underlies so much of outraged discourse. Knowing it helps you nope-out early from so much bad takeage.

😬 good luck, hope your power company does something nice! we invested in a battery a while back, and recently got to find out how low the fridge draw was. didn't last long but turns out it had enough for days. ecoflow, jackery, bluetti etc. if you don't have a house battery, these help.

no comment; why comment 😂

A headline says:

Skydance’s Discovery+ prices increase by up to 20 percent

A subheadline points to the question raised by the headline:

The higher prices are said to be unrelated to the Skydance merger.

The phrasing "are said to be", while entirely passive, could be interpreted as an implied comment from a not-so-credulous editor.

easy answer but maybe not the real one? maybe there are two options: a very strong memory that contains the whole piece as a unit, or another memory that has a collection of the parts, linked. length, complexity, muscle sense, phrases, order, repetition, & other known pieces probably affect it.

extremes of human ability are often fun mind expanders just to see. i wonder if the variance in structure (blocks vs phrases) is higher than inventions. that could ease memory.

Every so often, someone writes their idea that we could just add a little remote control thingy to a power system or a car or an industrial control system, and I remember so many people don't read or think about security at all. But also they usually get responses about reality, so I get hope.

You move the little metal pointer to the first digit, tap the left button on the handset-rest once, and repeat for each number. It's common for the pointer to get stuck (it was a bad design). Just push it harder.
