Something about the number of first hand descendent accounts in this thread drove things home in a manner I didn’t expect. The clarity of “it was the Church, but also it was us”.

It’s a bit odd to talk about potential costs when in reality nobody has *any* idea what Carney actually has in mind, I can’t remember a single time in the past 50 years where one man was given such latitude to determine Canada’s future in the absence of *any* public debate or discussion.

There could be a political cost in addition to the financial price tag for Canada’s proposed “unique alliance” with the European Union.

Dolly is a great example of why there are no good billionaires. Had Dolly not given back - had she hoarded her wealth - she would almost certainly have had ten-figures of wealth. But she didn't. She gave and she gave. She had more than anybody needed so she gave. That's what you do with wealth.

I’m not an AI hater: I’ve used it for my fair share of projects that involve coding or for troubleshooting various technology problems. In my work testing Apple’s Apple Intelligence releases, I’ve generated some images, all truly bizarre and many of them good for nothing beyond a joke. But I have been fascinated by the response to Anthropic’s AI watermarking scheme, especially after I read my friend John Gruber’s full-throated rebuttal. I have great respect for John as a writer. He truly cares about details: he’s meticulous about the words he picks, the way he constructs sentences and arguments. This...
