Landscape oriented, 16:9 image.

A sandy beach in the foreground, still wet from the retreating tide. There is a strip of land at the end of the beach with a bungalow on it to the right hand side and several telegraph or electricity posts.

Behind this a large hill stands on the horizon. It looks like it is looming over the aforementioned strip of land but it is in fact several kilometres away on the far side of an ocean bay.

The hill's steep slopes are forested on the left, while its right hand side is comprised of precipitous limestone cliffs. Towards the left hand side of its broad, flat summit a large neolithic cairn is silhouetted against the sky.

The sky itself is pale blue with scattered light clouds.

Another child's tombstone from Roman Antibes for #TombTuesday. The name of the 5-year-old isn't on the fragment but it records their mother (Frontina) and that the tomb is intended for the parents too. The axe symbol may allude to the tomb's construction while the ivy leaf is uncannily heart-shaped…
Part of a carved tombstone of the 3rd century AD, with the epitaph:
---vixit annos]V dies XXXXV
---et---]nia Frontina
---et si]bi poterisquae
suis vivi fecer]unt
The stone is decorated with a relief carving of a small axe (ascia) and an incised ivy leaf (hedera)

For #MosaicMonday, a c. 60-50 BCE #mosaic floor from the basis villæ, the Late Republican core of Hadrian's Villa. If his wife Vibia #Sabina inherited this estate, her Antonine relatives held a 200-year connection to these local stones, unified by descent rather than adoption. #AncientBluesky 🏺
GEOMETRIC MOSAIC FLOOR, C. 60-50 BCE. BASIS VILLÆ, HADRIAN'S VILLA

A Late Republican mosaic floor in the basis villæ, the original nucleus of Hadrian's Villa, an area long closed to the public. The floor features a tricolour geometric pattern creating a woven trompe l'oeil effect. Rectangular blocks of reddish-brown stone tesseræ are arranged symmetrically around small squares of white stone, sharply delineated by rows of dark grey tesseræ. Dating to c. 60-50 BCE, this elegant mosaic floor in tesseræ of local materials contrasts with Hadrian's C2 expansion that embellished the estate with polychrome marble from across the empire. A widely-held theory suggests Hadrian chose this site because his wife, Vibia Sabina, inherited this older villa. Her mother Matidia, niece of Trajan, was the ancestress of the Antonine dynasty, and if the inheritance of this villa passed through her, then all the emperors from Hadrian to Commodus could claim this as a family property stretching back over two centuries.

✨ #MosaicMonday in Cologne Cathedral: Spain is personified as a crowned woman holding a model of Santiago de Compostela Cathedral — part of a wider allegorical programme of Christian nations. #SacredArt #SantiagoDeCompostela #WSocialPics #Cologne #CologneCathedral #ChurchArt #MosaicArt #Germany
Close-up of a floor mosaic in Cologne Cathedral showing an allegorical representation of Spain. A crowned female figure sits on a throne in flowing pale and reddish robes and holds a detailed architectural model of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela on her lap. She belongs to a larger symbolic programme in which major Christian nations are represented as enthroned female figures, each holding the principal church associated with that country. Spain is represented by Santiago de Compostela, while other figures in the wider composition represent Italy with St Peter’s Basilica in Rome, the Byzantine Empire with Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, and France with Reims Cathedral. The scene is formed from thousands of small mosaic pieces in cream, ochre, brown, muted red and blue-grey tones and is surrounded by elaborate floral and geometric ornament.Close-up of a floor mosaic in Cologne Cathedral showing an allegorical representation of Spain. A mosaic showing a scene from the Fourth Crusade. A tall tower of perhaps 5 floors with windows on each level. Conical roof.

Two large figures (not to scale) face a soldier. His image is damaged, but he wears chain mail & carries a shield. His arm is raised, maybe he has a weapon to attack the two figures?

For this #MosaicMonday we look up into the spectacular presbytery vault of San Vitale in #Ravenna. To me, the Ravenna #mosaics are an astonishing collection, the last magnificent product of late antiquity. But whose empire does this shimmering C6 CE ceiling actually represent? #AncientBluesky 🏺
PRESBYTERY VAULT MOSAICS, C. 547 CE. BASILICA OF SAN VITALE, RAVENNA

A view looking straight up into the vaulted ceiling of the presbytery. At the apex within a starry medallion is the Lamb of God. The central wreath is supported by four white robed angels, a visual inheritance from classical winged Victories. They stand upon blue globes, an ancient symbol of cosmic dominion. The vault sections are filled with a lush paradise of acanthus vines and birds, echoing Augustan imagery of abundance. This shared classical vocabulary reflects the complex political reality of C6 CE Ravenna. The basilica was begun under Ostrogothic rule, a regime using Roman art to present themselves as theoretically still part of the empire. When Justinian consecrated the church in c. 547 CE he did not have to replace the Ostrogothic aesthetic. The Gothic kings' official style was already Roman, allowing this final flowering of late antiquity to bridge two competing empires.
