The Viking Mask Stone. A runestone set up in memory of a warrior who died in battle, c. AD 970-1020. Runic inscription: ‘Gunnulfr and Eygautr/Auðgautr and Áslakr and Hrólfr raised this stone in memory of Fúl, their partner, who died when kings fought’. From Aarhus, Denmark 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows the front of a Viking Age memorial runestone carved from granite and decorated with a large mammen-style face mask. A Runic inscription runs on two sides of the stone and above the mask.

The face of the mask is roughly triangular in shape, painted black, and with a long braided beard made of thick black snake-like tendrils. There are two tendrils on top of the head, each of which wrap around one of two leaf-shaped ears, and the ends of the tendrils appear like two horns on top of the head. The face has two dark blue circular eyes and a grimacing mouth which reveals a red tongue, and two white teeth, one at either side. Runestone dimensions: Height 160 cm, Width varies between 47-70 cm.

The runestone was found in Aarhus in an old water mill which burned down in 1849. When the mill was originally built the runestone was used as a building stone. It is now on display at the Moesgaard Museum.

Something wonderful for the weekend! About 40,000 years ago, during the #IceAge, this tiny figurine was sculpted from mammoth ivory. Imagine the artist at work, sitting by the warmth and flickering light of a fire, carving what is the world’s oldest known sculpture of a horse! 📷 by me #Archaeology
Side profile of a horse figurine sculpted from mammoth ivory, measuring 2.5 cm height, 4.8 cm width, and 0.7 cm depth. It has a lowered head with a long curving neck and convex curved back. The four legs are incomplete. The top of the tail remains. The eyes, nostril and mouth are carved as indents. The surface has a dark grey/brown shiny patina, which was once likely pale white in colour.

Excavated in 1931, together with a number of other ivory animal figurines, from the Vogelherd Cave, Swabian Jura, Germany. Known as the ‘Vogelherd Horse’ it is the oldest known sculpture of a horse. On display at the Museum of Ancient Cultures at Hohentübingen Castle, Tübingen, Germany

This time last year I was lucky enough to see this amazing artefact at an exhibition at the @museecluny.bsky.social in Paris - a prehistoric spearhead fashioned from rock crystal, discovered in France and possibly up to 20,000 years old.
A leaf shaped worked piece of translucent rock crystal that was used in prehistoric times as an arrow or spear head.

#FindsFriday Beautiful Mesolithic baskets! So well-preserved they look modern rather than made by hunter-gatherers some 9,500 years ago! A rare glimpse of ancient crafts still in use today! Cave of Los Murciélagos, southern Spain. Museo Arqueológico Nacional, Madrid 📷 by me #Archaeology
Three almost complete small natural fibre baskets in three different sizes, made of twined raw esparto grass. Decorated with geometric motifs made with dyed fibres although these are difficult to discern in my photograph. Found at the Cave of Los Murciélagos(Cave of bats) in southern Spain. The baskets are remarkably well-preserved as a result of the unique conditions in the cave; a combination of low humidity and cooling winds. On display at the National Archaeology Museum in Madrid. Recent analysis has dated the fibre baskets to about 7,500 BC during the Iberian Mesolithic period

Herne the Hunter, the #BonfireSculpture for 2024 is done. Herne, his origin lost in the mists of time, appeas in Shakespeare's 'The Merry Wives of Windsor', I first knew him via Susan Cooper's book 'Dark is Rising'. Accounts see him haunting Windsor Great Park and leading the Wild Hunt.
