Mayburgh Henge, near Penrith, Cumbria. A 3m high bank of river cobbles with a 100m central diameter forms a huge enclosed space. A singular monolith stands within this space near to the centre of the henge. #StandingStoneSunday #MayburghHenge #Cumbria @stoneclub.bsky.social @megalithic.bsky.social

The sole surviving stone at Mayburgh Henge. It is thought that four stones once stood in the centre of the henge with an additional four at the entrance.

Two Hogback tombstones, the Warriors Tombstone (left) and the Saint’s Tombstone (right). Both were found in the foundations of the north wall when it was blasted out with dynamite prior to its reconstruction in the late 19th century.

Fishing Stone. The lower half depicts Thor and Hymir attempting to catch the Midgard Serpent, Jörmungandr. The upper half depicts the Christian symbol of a Hart trampling the sea monster.

13th & 14th century grave covers in the south porch with motifs of a sword and a pair of shears, thought possibly to indicate the graves of a man and woman.

A Beltane visit to Long Meg and her Daughters. Long Meg has it all, a red sandstone monolith with rock art next to a huge stone circle of 69 stones. Long Meg. 3.6 metre red sandstone monolith, with rock art. Stood in a grassy field enclosed by a drystone wall. A few trees and the distant hills are in the background.

Numerous glacial boulders (Long Meg’s Daughters), some positioned upright, some now fallen. Long Meg is in the distance and a farm track runs through the circle. A Sycamore tree, freshly in leaf, is to the left of the photo and the still bare branches of an Ash tree is to the upper right.

Denge sound (acoustic) mirrors. Built in the late 1920s/early 1930s as an experimental early warning system for incoming aircraft but as aircraft speed increased they were superseded by radar.
