My new book, #AHistoryOfEnglandIn25Poems, includes the Old English poem 'The Battle of #Maldon': the story of a heroic English defeat against Vikings. Here in #Växjö: this #RuneStone set up by 'Toki the #Viking', c. 1000 (see AltText). A reminder that a villain in one story can be a hero in another.
Inscription reads: 'Tóki [or Tyke]: Tóki the Viking, raised the stone in memory of Gunnarr, Grímr's son. May God help his soul!'
Toki's chosen epithet, 'Viking', likely indicates that he was involved in Viking campaigns. The date of the rune stone is pretty much exactly contemporaneous with the Old English poem.
