This seems to me to get it exactly right and obviously applies beyond mathematics: solving a problem is not the same as developing conceptual understanding and insight, and might even come at the expense of it.

Our everyday language and habits and ideas of what's normal incorporate all kinds of political ideas that reinforce the existing structures of domination. That's what ideology is. An important part of the work of politically-engaged intellectuals is to help us become conscious of this.

Mert Geyiktepe & @drodrik.bsky.social examine the evolution of the US discourse on China over time from various public records and show that presidential speech on China appears to be a follower of other sources, with sentiment only turning negative after 2008. cepr.org/voxeu/column... #EconSky
The figure plots net sentiment, the number of positive minus negative China sentences divided by the number of China sentences, averaged across the documents that mention China. The sources are congressional, presidential, elite news, non-elite news, Reddit, and think tanks.

Policy narratives in the US on China have undergone a dramatic transformation in recent years. This column draws on various kinds of public records and employs text-as-data methods to examine the evolution of the US discourse on China over time and also across different sources of public narrative. Whereas the 19th century demonstrates oscillating trends, a clearer pattern emerges in the latter half of the 20th century, one driven less by fluctuating developments and more by ideological and political patterns. The overall trends in net sentiment suggest an interesting contrast between presidential discourse and other sources, with presidential speech appearing to have been a follower.

Yes. This point is not sufficiently recognized in the global imbalances debate. If you think your CA deficit is excessive and caused by factors outside your borders, you should tax or otherwise discourage capital inflows. Tariffs are a very blunt tool at best. +
